| My Message to Democrats: Listen to the People and Make This 4th of July Energy Independence Day |
|

|
|
This week I want to do something a little different.
Although my Winning the Future message has always been directed at all Americans, whether they consider themselves Republicans, Democrats, or independents, today I am directing my message specifically to Democrats. And my message is this:
The American people have spoken. Are your leaders listening?
Over 1.1 Million Americans Call on Congress to "Drill Here, Drill Now"
We really had no idea, just 35 days ago when we first posted the "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" petition here, that we would provide the spark that has ignited a fire among frustrated, struggling Americans.
In just 35 days, over 1.1 million Americans have signed the petition. Seven hundred and fifty thousand signed in just three weeks. Almost 100,000 signed up in a single day.
Americans of all political parties have signed the "Drill Here, Drill Now" petition. Here's what they're saying:
The 1.1 million Americans who have signed the petition are appealing to Congress to allow environmentally responsible ways to produce more energy here, at home.
They're not calling for higher taxes on oil companies.
They're not blaming foreigners for our energy problems.
They're not begging the Saudis to sell us more oil.
And so my message to the party that controls Congress is this:
The American people have spoken. Are you listening?
New Poll Shows 74 Percent of Americans Support Offshore Drilling
Through our polling at American Solutions we have long known that a whopping 81 percent of Americans support developing more domestic energy, including oil and coal. And this 81 percent majority is made up of 85 percent of the Republicans, 83 percent of the independents and 76 percent of the Democrats surveyed.
Now we have even more data showing widespread support for increasing domestic energy production.
A new Rasmussen Poll has revealed that a full 67 percent of Americans support offshore drilling.
What is the party breakdown behind these numbers? The supporters were 85 percent Republican, 57 percent Democrat and 60 percent unaffiliated voters.
Moreover, a new Zogby poll shows that 74 percent of Americans support drilling offshore for our American oil. The supporters were 90 percent Republican, 58 percent Democrat, and 75 percent independent voters. A related survey by Zogby also shows that 59 percent of Americans support drilling in ANWR.
In other words, the American people have spoken. Are you listening Democrats?
175 Members of Congress Have Pledged to Increase U.S. Oil Production. Only One Is a Democrat.
As usual, the American people know intuitively what Washington just doesn't understand: You don't have to be a Republican to be struggling to put gas in your car. Democratic and independent families, commuters and small business owners are hurting too.
So why haven't Democrats in Congress responded? Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R.-Ga.) is circulating a petition challenging his House colleagues to pledge to ''vote to increase U.S. oil production to lower gas prices for Americans.'' As of this writing, 175 members of Congress have signed.
Only one, Neal Abercrombie of Hawaii, is a Democrat.
Drilling opponents support more drilling so long as there is no oil
Perhaps some Democrats have been reluctant to sign on because of two popular talking points making the rounds.
These opponents say that oil and gas companies already hold 68 million acres of federal land (offshore and land combined) that they are not using to produce oil and gas. They also say it would take 10 years before any of that oil makes it into our gas tanks.
Just this weekend on Meet the Press, Sen. Joe Biden (D.-Del.) said, "They [the oil companies] have now leased 41 million acres of offshore leases. They're only pumping in 10.2 million of those acres. . . . And John [McCain] says they need more? And it would take 10 years for it to come online."
There are a number of problems with these arguments.
First, when federal waters or lands are leased to energy companies, the first step is to explore for oil - in other words, look for it. Most of the acres leased for oil end up being determined to not hold enough oil or gas to make it profitable for energy companies to actually extract it. So the vast majority of those 68 million acres are not being used for a simple reason: they're currently unusable.
Given this fact, it's obvious that citing the amount of currently unused leased land is a ruse. It allows opponents of using American oil to seem as if they actually support it, when in truth they only support more drilling in areas where there is not enough oil to make it worthwhile to drill. In other words, they actually don't support using our American oil to lower gas prices.
Either it is a ruse, or it is a testament to the profound arrogance of the Washington elite that they believe they understand the business of oil production better than American oil companies.
Drill here, drill now, pay less ... in the short term and long term
Lastly, even if we were to accept the estimate of 10 years to get American oil into our gas tank (if America made it a priority to quickly extract our oil I'm confident we could find a way to speed up the process), there is good reason to believe the short-term affect on oil prices would be significant.
While estimates range on the degree to which oil futures trading is affecting the price of oil, there is broad consensus that it is playing a role. The very act of opening America's vast oil deposits for extraction would send an immediate signal to speculators that supply will be increased, and that betting on higher prices for oil is no longer a safe investment. Prices will fall as a result.
Also, beginning the process of drilling for our American oil would allow us the freedom to empty part of the strategic oil reserve into the market on the promise it will be replenished by these future American sources. This immediate increase in the supply of oil would cause a decrease in price.
Make This July 4th Energy Independence Day
Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, if your leaders aren't listening to the clear, expressed will of the people then you have it in your power to change this, to send the message to Washington that this July 4th will be unlike other July 4ths.
This Independence Day we declare our energy independence. And we give our elected officials this choice:
Either take action to drill here and drill now for American oil or the American people will take action this fall.
What You Can Do NOW to Send a Message to Washington
Here's what you can do:
|
If your Representative hasn't signed the Westmoreland petition, contact him or her here and make your voice heard. |
|
If you haven't signed the "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" petition, click here and do so today. Our goal is to have three million signatures in time for the Republican and Democratic national conventions. |
|
When your House member is back in the district for the Fourth of July holiday, take the opportunity to personally let him or her know that Americans don't need to be suffering under $4-plus gas and that he has a responsibility to do something about it. |
Senator McCain Proposes a $300 Million Prize for a "Super" Car Battery
One of the solutions we've proposed at American Solutions for reducing our dependence on foreign oil and producing more American energy is offering prizes for innovative answers to our energy needs.
When you think about it, prizes are the essence of the American way. Rather than bloated, bureaucratic government programs that are black holes for tax dollars, prizes unleash the creative, entrepreneurial spirit that built this country.
That's why I am so pleased to see that Sen. John McCain has proposed a $300 million prize for the individual who can develop a "super" car battery that can power cars more cheaply and with less harm to the environment.
Congratulations to Sen. McCain for his faith in the ingenuity of the American people. Sen. Obama should join him in passing legislation to create this prize now. This is an idea whose time has come.
A Life Transformed By United Cerebral Palsy
Finally, today I want to mention a remarkable organization that is doing remarkable things for people with disabilities.
This past Thursday, I had the privilege to speak to the leadership of a wonderful organization and member of the Center for Health Transformation, United Cerebral Palsy. UCP may be one of the most effective organizations you've never heard of. Through their network of affiliates, they provide care to more than 30,000 people with disabilities each day. They approach their work with energy, wisdom and tremendous creativity.
To give you a sense for how this truly 21st century organization operates, their CEO, Steve Bennett, spent several weeks this past November in briefings across Silicon Valley to understand where technology is heading and how it can be put to use immediately to transform the lives of the 54 million Americans with disabilities. This is exactly the approach we need throughout our health system. Click here to learn more about this organization and how you can help.
One example of the wonderful results UCP and its affiliates can deliver is a remarkable girl named Gina. When Gina was just 2 years old she was diagnosed with autism. She did not really start speaking any words until after age 3. Last Thursday, at the age of 6, she sang the National Anthem as beautifully as I've ever heard it sung. You owe it to yourself to read her story here, and if you are planning an event you couldn't find a better person to open it with the National Anthem.
Your friend,
 Newt Gingrich
P.S. -- Callista and I were very pleased to see this announcement that our film, "Rediscovering God in America" will be shown at the Carpenter's Workshop Fellowship in Seven Valleys, Pa., on July 2. If your church or organization would like to show our film as well, click here to learn how.

Stop funding terrorism...buy American energy!! So much for a democratic landslide in November. Energy will be their demise. This is what happens when a national politcial party is in bed with every one other than the American people.
Remember, elections matter.

The Democrats are fools. They finally get Congress back and poised to get the White House and their approach to energy is going to have them lose both within four years. They just do not get it. The high price of oil at a time when the economy is on the brink of recession will push us into it. And we will not be able to get out of recession because Americans will have no discretionary money for spending. So most Americans will be spending every penny they have to drive to work, keep their home and to buy food. No money to buy a new tv, a new car, a vacation, or any thing else. So the economy will worsen under the Democrats. Even more families will lose their homes. And if the fuel crisis was not enough to move us into recession, Americans for change are going to vote Obama into office and he will raise taxes at a time when anyone with an ounce of understanding of economics would know we need to cut taxes and reduce government spending to prevent the economy out of going into recession. And in the end, the People will rise up against the Democrats and throw them out of office within 4 years. But oh, what a hell we will all be going through.

By ajckck @ Friday, June 27, 2008 10:37 PM What is WRONG with you people? Offshore drilling will NOT solve our problems. People need to focus on conserving energy and our GOVERNMENT needs to focus on pursuing ALTERNATE forms of fuel and making those forms AVAILABLE to the public, poor AND rich and all those between. Have any of you even taken a moment to research the potential harmful effects of offshore drilling on the environment and marine wildlife? Do you even care? And are you sincerely naive enough to believe that the corporations who run our country would actually sell their oil to Americans for less than they could sell it elsewhere? Corporations are all about making a buck, so if imported fuel is going to cost us 4$ a gallon, you can be damn sure they'll be charging us $4 a gallon for domestic as well. Get a clue!
aj, You are what is wrong!
1. The first thing wrong is that people like you are allowed to vote. You have absolutely no understanding of economics 101 yet, you are still allowed to vote. I shouldn't be so hard on you, it's the schools in this country that have turned out students with your understanding of economics yet, you are allowed to vote.
2. Second thing wrong it is not our governments job to pursue "Alternative Energy". It is also not our governments job to tell companies how they should invest their profits into Alternative energies. Yet, people with your mindset seem to think these are normal things to do and are shocked when the companies balk at such requests yet, you are still allowed to vote!
3. The third thing wrong is how pompous you are to think you are the only person concerned with the potential impact that off-shore drilling can cause. Of course the companies that do the drilling must provide impact studies and contingency plans for potential spills before any drilling can begin. Most importantly, they must provide protection for their investors which fund all of the impact studies, contingency plans and drilling from being sued by lawyers from the envirornmentalist groups. Just another lesson in econ 101 yet, you are still allowed to vote!
4. And finally aj, your absolute ignorance on how goods and services are priced tops my all-time list of stupidity. For one last lesson on econ 101, goods and services are priced by free markets! To set the price, first you must have a product or service that is in demand or can be marketed to be in demand. I believe oil makes the grade here. When the good or service comes to market, the price is set by how much the market will bear. You sell your good or service for as much as you can! Supply and demand will adjust the market price up and down. My 6th grade daughter learned this this year in school. Perhaps you missed that month in school and this has just been a refresher course for you. Perhaps, you just didn't think before you started typing your post. There are no rules in this country about speaking before you think but their should be rules about voting before you think. If a few more people would have done that over the years, we wouldn't be in this shape now yet, you can still vote!
Here's your clue

June 28 (Bloomberg) -- OPEC President Chakib Khelil ''predicted'' that the price of oil will climb to $170 a barrel before the end of the year.
Predicted?!?! He is counting on it !!!! Since when has OPEC wished us well? And why are we on our knees all the time to this OPEC?
What will be your breaking point? When? When will you agree to drill IMMEDIATELY? $6, $7, $8 per gallon??
Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and OPEC are holding the AMERICAN PEOPLE hostage. They are AGAINST Drilling, AGAINST Nuclear which to me means they are against Energy Independence. It is absolutely "insane" that the CONGRESS is still REFUSING to allow increased production of AMERICAN-MADE ENERGY. Drill IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY.

We used to have ten oil companies controlling the distribution of oil. Thanks to Pres. Clinton and a republican congress we now have five. Let's split them up so that we'll have ten again. Competition will lower the price. Increase the oil future margins to at least 50%. And limit the trading of oil futures to oil companies only. It used to be that way, but republicans screwed it up. Congress can do this by tomorrow morning. Prices will be down overnight.

I recently received an e-mail regarding a very good possible recipient for McCain's reward. Google "MYT Engine." This independent company has devevloped an engine that measures 14" in diameter and 14" long. It can replace a 3000lb diesel engine in semi! The one for your cars is only 7" and weighs a mere 25lbs! What's even better, it can run on soy bean bio-fuel.

This is a matter of NATIONAL SECURITY. The President should hammer this point every day. It is time to begin boosting supplies of all forms of energy "RIGHT HERE AT HOME" to reduce America's DEPENDENCE on foreign sources of oil. What will it take for this Congress to finally take action and help ease the pain of the Pelosi Premium on behalf of struggling families and small businesses? Speaker Pelosi has the POWER to schedule a vote on our plan to begin breaking America's costly dependence on foreign sources of energy. SHE REFUSES !!! She should not wait another day to do so.
The American people want REAL solutions that will invest in AMERICAN RESOURCES, create AMERICAN JOBS, and lower prices for American consumers." That means tapping U.S. oil reserves. DRILL HERE IN AMERICA ! DRILL IMMEDIATELY !!

A new survey shows that more Americans will be staying home this summer (Just what the LEFTISTS want). The problem is that they are using more energy to keep entertained. So the question is are Americans conserving by staying away from their cars? NOT at all. Their ENERGY bills are INCREASING. Americans are using Air Conditioning, DVD equipment, Televisions, Audio equipment, Video game consoles, Computers, etc. in order to keep themselves entertained. Savings? Hardly.

The fool below feels that domestic drilling won't solve our problems. Clearly the words of a LEFTIST. People like that work TIRELESSLY at telling you to reduce consumption. Nice trick. What they really want you to do is to REDUCE YOUR WAY OF LIFE. We need more oil now UNTIL there is a safe and proven alternative to replace oil. Currently there isn't any. Hybrid technology still requires you to fuel up with gasoline. Batteries? GET REAL. And I will not put my family at risk by cramming them into a UnSmart Car. Domestic drilling will ABSOLUTELY solve the problem we are having today. Bill Clinton Vetoed a bill for drilling in ANWR in 1996. Over 10 years ago. We would have the supply problems we have today. The fool below suggests that OPEC produce more. In other words people like that want us to be dependent on FOREIGN SOURCES of energy for their own twisted, hoax agenda to save the planet. Just the very notion of passing a bill LIFTING all bans on drilling will send OPEC NATIONS running scared. Why? Because we wouldn't need their 'dirty' oil. DRILL HERE IN AMERICA. Thank You! Thanks both for the "Drill Here, Drill Now..." effort and bringing UCP to our attention.
For over 25 years we have done everything the environmentalists & many Democrats asked... My wife & I have driven smaller cars, chosen for their fuel efficiency & low emissions. We've conserved energy & water, supported growth & marketing of Organic foods, bought environmentally friendly products, recycled & bought recycled products... in essence, done everything we could that they asked us to do.
And now they want to punish us with higher gas prices that we cannot afford. They say it's the only way to get folks to conserve... Well BULL****! If millions of Americans conserving energy, living as environmentally friendly lives as possible haven't been enough, then What Will Be?!!! And When will it be enough?
When will the politicians saying just conserve more start conserving themselves? You want to buy carbon offsets? Well give it to us, the Americans who supported you all these years! If you folks in Congress want to feel good about not conserving yourselves, lower the price at the pumps for all us millions who have. That's the ONLY thing you can do to lessen the Sting of Betrayal!

The new revenues from the drilling in AnWar, off the east and west coast and the Oil Shale can be dedicated to pay for infrastructure repairs. Roads, bridges, levee repairs in the midwest and in LA as well as incentives to create the best battery, the best wind turbine, the best solar collectors.
So congressman, you don't want to fund the repair to the bridge in your town?

you can have six million people sign the petition and nothing will happen.
Why?
BECAUSE WE HAVE A GOVERNMENT THAT DOES NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT AND IS NOT CAPABLE OF SOLVING ISSUES THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD SOLVE; YET THEY WANT TO TAKE ON MORE THINGS THEY CAN SCREW UP LIKE HEALTH CARE!
We have a President of Iraq, not the US, who will never see that conflict over despite that we have achieved EVERYTHING that was our stated purpose for going in there!
We ensured no weapons of mass destruction.
We got Hussein and his ring of leaders
We allowed a constitution, elections, and a Democratically elected government established.
We trained the Army, the police.
We poured billions into the country
We surged to tamp down a civil war
We broke the back of Al Quada in Iraq
80% of Iraqis want us to leave and 80% of Americans think it is time to let Iraqis have their country back.
And oh by the way, we have another country that Kempling wrote about - Afganistan - that we are wasting our time with since we are making same mistake as Vietnam and letting the enemy have sancuary in Cambodia. The irony of Iraq is that we went to war to get Bin Ladin, and his is still setting fat and happy in Pakistan, a country that already HAS NUCLEAR WEAPONS! HELLO, EARTH CALLING BUSH!
But the Decider is in his own world divorced of ANY reality; NEVER WANTING TO SAY IT IS OVER like Hitler keeping the 7th Army in Stalingrad. TODAY, HE SHOULD ANNOUNCE MISSION ACCOMPLISHED ON A NATIONWIDE TELEVISION SPEECH TO THE NATION; AND PLAN PHASED WITHDRAWAL! but no, he will snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory and deny our military men and women a GI Bill and college when they return! His concern for the Soldier is to keep them returning to Iraq over and over and over through a back door draft. If Iraq and Afganistan are still Strategically vital, then institute a draft, double the size of the military and get over there and get it done. But the truth is these countries are not strategic and the best way to get Bin Ladin is covertly.
And, we only hope he does not get us in another conflict with Iran who he will not negotiate; yet he negotiates with North Korea.
Now how about Congress?
The Democrats will DO NOTHING on this energy crisis. They do not care about the people either. Their answer is just make us all lower our standard of living while they rake in sweetheart deals from their special interest lobbies. How is it that Congressmen arrive in Washington with modest income and all leave rich? Because we have a government of the special interests, for the special interests, and by the special interests. And the special interests provide them those sweetheart deals to gain wealth! So no, they do not care about a petition!
BOTH the Congress and White House will do nothing about the borders and we read in the news that Mexican soldiers hired by drug cartell are invaded American homes and murdering people with automatic weapons!!!! We cannot secure our own borders which is why countries use to have Army's; while half way around the world we are securing Iraq, a country that even as a Democracy, will be aligned with Iran and hate our guts as 60% of Iraqi's think it is ok to kill Americans. Why are IED's succeful? Because the population supports killing Americans!
It is becoming clear to me that NOTHING will get this government to act in behalf of the People other than a peaceful march on Washington by the several millions and then to vote EVERY incumbant out of office no matter what party they are.
We have a President and Congress who's attitude is like the Royals prior to the French Revolution - Their attitude toward the people is to "Let them eat cake."
IT IS TIME WE SHOW THESE POLS who they work for!

I'm thrilled to see that more than 1 million Americans, of all political persuasions, have joined to send a clear message to Congress. Until we understand that the power to reduce prices is in our own hands, we will continue to be slaves to the Middle East.
Even if it did take 10 years for the oil to get into our gas tanks, I would rather start today to pursue a solution than waste another 10 years making excuses.

It is insanity to think that OPEC is going to do anything to drop the price of oil. What incentive do they have? With prices at current levels they are just doing what makes sense and what any business would do in the same situation, "make hay while you can". Any increase in domestic supplies even if they will not come on line immediately will send a clear message, "we do not intend to stay dependant on foriegn countries for energy.
Politicians in Washington should be attacking this issue, not taking sides and turning this into the usual bipartisan bickering of the past. Where are the real leaders?

Oil prices "will not come down," OPEC president Chakib Khelil said Tuesday, assuring that the oil cartel has already done what it can on the matter. "OPEC has already done what OPEC can do and prices will not come down," Khelil told journalists as he arrived for a meeting with EU energy officials in Brussels.
There. You see how friendly and helpful this OPEC is?? Wait...here's more.....
OPEC President Chakib Khelil insisted Tuesday that oil producers saw no need to raise supply, blaming high prices on factors such as U.S. pressure on Iran over its nuclear program and the weak dollar. Another support for high crude prices came from new sanctions against Iran which had been approved by European Union nations.
So there..... you see how these Nations stick together?? WHEN are we going to stick together and TAP our OWN SOURCES OF ENERGY. WHEN???? Why are we on our KNEES begging these Nations for their oil when we have more oil here in AMERICA !!!!!!!!!!!

I even feel your hands in the spate of "Discharge Petitions" in the house starting with Tim Walberg's. Again, the major feature of "Drilling here" is that as we make a shift to new technologies for our transportation needs, WHERE do we want to spend those last decades of petro-dollars? Do we want those dollars to stay in this country, or send them overseas? Do we want those oil jobs here, or overseas? As for tax credits? Great! Give people $5K and they can buy a golf cart to use on around-town travel. Slap a solar cell on top and they'll be even better. But asking people to borrow money to buy super expensive 0 emission vehicles is about like asking them to take another ARM out on their house.
