Facts About the Uighur Detainees

Last week, the Obama administration announced that the remaining Chinese Uighurs held at Guantanamo will be accepted by the island nation of Palau.

The announcement has brought Newt Gingrich’s May 15 op-ed “Let’s NOT Meet the Uighurs” back into focus.  You can read it here

A lot of disinformation and spin is being hurled about regarding the refusal to release these soon to be former detainees into the United States.  including the notion that the decision to not release any of the Uighur detainees into the United States is somehow the result of a Chinese propaganda and counterintelligence campaign.  Some have even questioned the source of the information Newt was using when he wrote the op-ed above.

There is no question that the human rights record of China is deplorable.  However, the question at hand is not China’s treatment of the Uighur population at large.  The question is whether the United States should release any of these Uighur detainees into the United States.

Much of information used for the op-ed on these 17 prisoners came from unclassified documents requested through the Freedom of Information Act pertaining to those held at Guantanamo.  All of these documents can be found at the New York Times website: http://projects.nytimes.com/guantanamo

Specifically, these documents reveal the following facts, which are indisputable:

  • At least 16 of the 17 of the detainees held at the beginning of the Obama administration are alleged to have received training at terrorist camps in Afghanistan.
  • 13 of the 17 are on record as admitting to receiving some sort of training in Afghanistan, including at the Eastern Turkistan Islamic Movement’s (ETIM) Tora Bora facilities.
  • 8 of the 17 are on record as admitting that the training camp was run by Abdul Haq, the head of ETIM.

(Tom Joscelyn at The Long War Journal has been particularly helpful in sorting through all these documents.  For specific quotes from the Uighurs in question, check here.)

The following facts, which are also indisputable, explain why this information is relevant:

  • ETIM (also called ETIP, for Eastern Turkistan Islamic Party) is classified as a terrorist organization by both the UN and US Treasury Department.
  • Abdul Haq – the head of ETIM and the person who runs the training camp in Tora Bora - is designated by both the US Treasury Department and The United Nations as a terrorist.
  • Since 2005, with the passage of the Real ID Act, US law (Section 1182 of Title 8, United States Code) PROHIBITS the admission of alien terrorists into USA.  [EDIT: The designation as a terrorist can be defined several ways that apply to the Uighur detainees in question.]
These indisputable facts lead to the following question for those who argue that the United States government should release these Uighur detainees into American communities:
  • Why are they willing to ignore U.S. Law to do so?
  • Furthermore, why are some legislators who voted for the Real ID Act now seeking to undermine it?  (See here the list of members who voted to ban alien terrorists from entering the United States.)
  • Finally, considering that Haq was designated a terrorist in April 2009 by the Obama administration, is it reasonable to believe that Haq is a terrorist, but that Haq’s students – whom he trained in his terrorist camp in Afghanistan – are safe enough to live in our communities?

I believe in responsibility. Usually whatever happens to you is the direct result of the choices you make. These guys decided to train as terrorists and now they will pay the price they themselves negotiated once they are returned to their homes in China.

Thanks for saying what needs to be said without worrying about being PC. It's past time to quit trying to appease the enemy. Hang tough!

It's interesting Newt has decided to backtrack so quickly. Kind of like his racism comment re: Sotomayor.

Maybe Newt needs to do some thinking before opening his significant jowls and squeaking out emotionally charged fear-mongering statements. That's what a real statesman does. Newt's more like a news "commentator".

The evidence does not lie.
Let us see and read the evidence and then make our decisions.

Keep up the good work Newt. You're doing a great job. And to send the Chinese back to China is the correct thing to do. Do we really want to release known terriorists into the U.S. "Come on guys, we know you didn't mean to do it!!!!!! We're sorry. Kill some more of us to prove you're with us and not really meanies."

Have any of you people who complain about Newt bothered to look deeper into whether or not these Uighars are really dangerous terrorists and not just simpletons who were in the wrong place at the wrong time? The links are here. Why knock Newt for telling the truth? What difference does it make to your safety whether you like Newt or not? These men are really and truly out to kill you and yours, a well as me and mine. Your name calling cannot change that!

Why are there posts here that have nothing to do with the subject at hand? If you aren't writting about the subject, don't write!

I believe Newt is 100% right and feel he should stick to his guns on this matter. Send them back where they came from. The USA is not responsible for these guys. No one wan't these guys released onto American soil. China is right, we are wrong. China should have these people back and do with them what they see fit.

I worked for President Reagan and quit the GOP in 2004 over the illegal policies and destructive anti-American acts of Bush and sleazebags (guys who leave their wives, serving divorce papers to them while they suffer from cancer in hospital are worse than evil) like you. Anything to get power. You are a loser who is continuing to boost the GOP into a reactionary Southern hole. Keep up the good work!

The Grinch cheated on how many wives? The man(?) cannot be trusted! Sociopathic Faux Nooz commentators are subversive activists and generally twist facts, take out of context and misquote to slander their opposition. If you have to deceive, you probably don't have much of a point and are playing a dangerous game.

The war on terro......and the prison in cuba

During WW2 thousands of Germans were kept in prisons within the United states, after the war ended they were sent back to GERMANY,,,,they were not sent to Burmuda, or France, or England,,,,they wee sent back to theri country of origin..period.

The "do gooders" Want want want, they cannot make a decision, the Obama administration wants wants wants, but cannot make a decision,,,WHY? the question was never asked Where do we send all these GERMAN and Japanese prisoners,,,as maybe their countrys might treat them wrongly as they surrendered rather than fight to the last man,,,,So the 200 to 300 prisoners in Cuba,,,if German, send them back to Germany, If from China, send them back to china,,Yeman, send them to Yeman, SaudiArabian, send them to the Saudis,,,,Egyptians sent them to Egypt,,,Russian send them to Russia,

The real problem here is "lack of common sence,,,,and as pointed out these are the same people that given a gun tomorrow would not hesitate to put any of us in the ground,,,,,Wake up America, before its too late,,,,Since the 4th century a Islanmic state has been their goal,,,,do you really believe that anyone from america is going to change their mind,,,,,,NO NO...

thank you for reading mi comments

Lyndon Baines made me a Republican with entitlements. You made me leave the party.
You are an ignorant self centered twit with nothing positive, no solutions just let the people who have the money keep the money. Pewrcentage wise 10% of the people control 90% of the wealth and pay only 60% of the taxes. Cut the horseshit, just tell it like it is, I got mine screw you.
