On this topic, you are spot on. We need to reduce greenhouse gases, but that doesn't mean we need less coal, rather it means we need more, but use our technology to convert it to clean coal for both our use and for foreign companies. This should be one of our primary activities during the next 4 years as we wait for the next Presidential election to roll around.

One other common sense thing to point out is that electricity is a commodity for which the average consumer does not necessarily have a say regarding its source. In general we care to the point that we can plug in and turn on, and then when we get the bill. Many of us have very little knowledge of the source. It's not like we could have the federal government injecting excess cost into it and have an individual choice to swich to a competing power generator that cost less. With that in mind, the only real choice consumers have is to use less based on ability to pay. And of course that will hurt the economy, at least for the period of time it takes the local political system to react and provide alternatives.
