Federalist Papers in Modern English
Blogged by:Matt Scofield | Comments:0 | (3/16/2010)

At the Conservative Blogger's Briefing today, Rep. Paul Broun of GA-10 referenced a book he reads regularly: The Federalist Papers in Modern English. Currently edition two is out and it looks like I good read, its a transliteration (not interpretation) of the Federalist Papers. I thought our readers here would appreciate a link to it, I've bought a copy for myself and will let you know how it is!

(Those fans of the King's English can buy the original version here)

Earmark Reform
Blogged by:newt.org | Comments:0 | (3/11/2010)

This morning Newt wanted to share this important step towards congressional reform led by the GOP:

"House GOP leaders are pushing rank-and-file Republicans to break their addiction to pet projects by going cold turkey and giving up the long-cherished practice of directing federal dollars to their home districts."

"The time has come for House Republicans to adopt an immediate, unilateral moratorium on all earmarks," said Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio and nine other GOP leaders in a joint statement Wednesday evening."

2 weeks notice

by Newt Gingrich

On March 4th, President Obama gave Americans 2 Weeks Notice that he intends to pass healthcare reform by March 18th. At the Center for Health Transformation we are providing ways for you to contact your Congressman now regarding this fundamental shift in the relationship between citizen and state.

Mark Steyn's latest column provides compelling analysis why you need to contact your Congressman now:

"(T)he governmentalization of health care is the fastest way to a permanent left-of-center political culture.

It redefines the relationship between the citizen and the state in fundamental ways that make limited government all but impossible...

...Once the state swells to a certain size, the people available to fill the ever expanding number of government jobs will be statists — sometimes hard-core Marxist statists, sometimes social-engineering multiculti statists, sometimes fluffily "compassionate" statists, but always statists.

The short history of the postwar welfare state is that you don't need a president-for-life if you've got a bureaucracy-for-life..."

I encourage you to contact your Congressman now

Federalism and western land
Blogged by:Matt Scofield | Comments:2 | (3/2/2010)

by Matt Scofield

Today I attended the Heritage Foundation's blogger briefing in D.C. and learned some interesting facts on federal land ownership. Did you know that:

  • The federal government currently owns roughly 660 million acres in the United States
  • Over 90 percent of all federal land is located in western states
  • In the past 10 years federal land acquisition funding has averaged over $300 million annually

As a result of the increased federal ownership of so much land in western states, Congressman Rob Bishop (UT-01) spoke at Heritage of his unique proposal to inject federalism via "intelligent decentralization" in Utah.

The pilot program, which could be extended to other states should it pass and prove successful, aims to help realign government by reducing cumbersome administration and spiraling costs at the federal level while ensuring that the delivery of government services in Utah will be more repsonsive toboth the people they're meant to help and the people who pay for them. I encourage you to learn more about Rep. Bishop's program here.
