Since 9/11 we have all experienced fear in our everyday lives. The possibility of another Terrorist attack is on our mind each and everyday. Days after the attacks, walking in New York City was dead quiet. Resuming back to work was difficult for many of the people who work there. While we have been fighting Terrorism and have elevated security when going through the airport, are we really safe or are we still vulnerable?
Clearly we have taken measures to create more security in our lives, and the airlines have certainly tried to make sure no terrorist attack will involve a major airplane. Still National security is much deeper than making sure your bottles are not over 3 oz. It comes in the size of oil barrels instead. Our dependence on Arab oil makes us vulnerable to multiple degrees. We are vulnerable financially and to any Arab control. All of our oil comes from those nations. The rising of gas prices has caused Americans to suffer because they control the price of oil and we do not drill our own oil.
By simply drilling in the United States we have more security since we are not dependent on other countries. As the debate continues, one must look at how secure are we and what are the benefits for drilling. We are in a war right now trying to make the lives of Americans safe from terrorists, but we aren’t taking all the steps. It’s like making the cupcake but forgetting the icing. You can’t call it a cupcake. How can we fight a war and forget other security aspects? We can’t call ourselves secure.
Other ways America is vulnerable is because we are cutting back on our military. Go into any ARMY ROTC program and more than half the cadets in there are willing and proud to protect and serve their country. They believe this is their job so let them do their job. Don’t have them sign up to train and not allow them to use their skills. By cutting back on our military we become vulnerable to attacks. Anytime the military is at ease, attacks are easier to plan and can be detrimental without preparation of the force needed.
So how vulnerable is America? As vulnerable as congress cuts back and still relies on other countries. For the most powerful nation, we can be weak.
