Statement from Newt Gingrich on the passing of the Reverend Dr. Jerry Falwell

New York City – The prayers of Callista and I go out to Dr. Falwell’s family, the members of Thomas Road Baptist Church, and the students for whom he dedicated his life.

His life is a testament not only to the power of faith to move hearts, but to the strength of the American ethos that stresses the importance of citizenship.

Dr. Falwell’s dedication to the creation of the Moral Majority and the Reagan majority was extraordinary. His next great mission was the creation of Liberty University , which is now an internationally recognized, world-class institution of higher learning.

Those two historic, life-time accomplishments will create a lasting legacy.

He was a great leader, a person totally sustained by his faith but able to work with many people from many different backgrounds without imposing rigidity on anyone else.

All of his many friends will miss him.

Thank you Newt for your kind words for Reverend Falwell. While many church leaders have gone the route of political correctness, it has been Reverend Falwell who has continued to lead with class and dignity.

His legacy will last for decades to come.

Tom Baker
Sterling Heights, MI

Dear Mr. Gingrich,

I hope you'll grant me the courtesy of reading this comment. I feel it is necessary to point, that it seems as though you do not take your responsibility as a role model seriously enough to check the grammar of your statements.
"The prayers of Callista and I go out to ...." conjures up an image of you leaving your house with a basket full of prayers from Callista, ready to be dropped off somewhere. If that was indeed the case, then so be it.

Never mind style, Mr. Gingrich? Never mind, then, that the first sentence of your essay on Nancy Pelosi in Time magazine implies that not only are both of you done being House Speaker, but you are also both no longer grandparents.

Politics aside, Sir, please check your grammar before making any kind of public statement. It might help you become president if there is some evidence that you are actually literate-- or even just articulate. God knows, we could use a president who is both but, after Mr. Bush, I'm willing to settle for one who possesses either attribute.

Sincerely,
Mayra

My many thanks to you for expressing your comments and tribute to the family of Rev. Falwell. He believed in true salvation through the spilled blood of Jesus Christ, Our Savior, and certainly shared this belief with all who would hear.

God always has a plan. We, as Christians, must continue to speak out. My prayer is that his university will continue to promote his morals and his belief of christians.

Our country needs prayer.

May God Bless,

Cheryl, SC
