Guy Vander Jagt was a genuine American patriot who lived his life in the service of his country.
He crisscrossed America seeking to build a lasting Republican majority in the House of Representatives.
With his support and determination Republicans held the first Capitol steps event in history, not in 1994, but in 1980 with then-Governor Ronald Reagan. It helped create an unexpected Republican majority in the U.S. Senate that year and became the model for the 1994 Capitol steps signing of the Contract with America. Guy was my friend, mentor and ally. Without him we would never have accomplished creating the first Republican majority in 40 years. While he was a partisan, he was a friendly partisan. He created lasting friendships on both sides of the aisle. Democrats who served with him on the Ways and Means Committee can testify to his friendship and practical common sense. His wife Carol, his cherished daughter Ginny, and all his many friends will miss him. His passing leaves a large hole in our lives. Remembering his genuine love and kindness will help fill that hole.
