Last week, liberals in Congress voted for the equivalent of a $150 billion tax increase. They voted to make your next trip to the gas station more expensive; to make your next airplane ticket more expensive; to make heating your home more expensive -- even to make feeding your family more expensive.

How did they do it? By voting to block environmentally sound production of U.S. energy in favor of continuing to be held hostage to oil from foreign dictatorships. I'll explain in a minute.

My Dad, Your Dad, and the Importance of History

First, I want to talk about my dad, your dad, and the importance of history.

My dad was a career army officer, and it's no exaggeration to say that he is responsible for the path I've taken in my life. When I was fifteen, Dad took me to visit the battlefield at Verdun, in France. It was the bloodiest battle of World War I, one of the bloodiest wars of the 20th century. As I came to understand the tremendous destructiveness of the battle -- and the distinct possibility that its outcome could have been different -- I knew that I would devote the rest of my life to standing between civilization and the madness of places like Verdun.

So in a very real way it's my father that I'm thinking about when I write my novels (with co-author and historian William Forstchen) of "active" or alternative history. My latest, the second in our Pacific War series, entitled Days of Infamy, is now out. As Father's Day approaches and you think about your father, consider a signed Days of Infamy or Pearl Harbor as a gift. They're exciting and informative looks at an important part of our history.

"A Vote That Would Make a Difference in People's Lives"

Who's to blame for our high gas prices? The oil companies? The Saudis? OPEC? The answer, unfortunately, is closer to home: The "No-We-Can't" Left in Congress.

Last Thursday, with oil at $124 a barrel, liberals on the Senate Appropriations committee voted to block environmentally sound development of oil shale in Colorado.

According to the Investors Business Daily there are an estimated 1 trillion barrels of oil trapped in shale in the U.S. and Canada. Retrieving just a tenth of it would quadruple our current oil reserves.

But the "No-We-Can't" Left in Congress -- as they're prone to do -- said no, and Americans will pay the price. Colorado Senator Wayne Allard (R) put it best when he said: "If we are really serious about reducing pain at the pump, this is a vote that would make a difference in people's lives."

Saudi Arabia Did More Last Week to Lower Gas Prices Than Congress Did

The Left just doesn't seem to get it. They spent much of last week ridiculing the President for visiting Saudi Arabia in an effort to lower oil prices. Here's what Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on Friday:

"The president seems to value his friendship with the Saudis more than his obligation to help the American people with gas prices."

But what Senator Schumer doesn't seem to understand is that the Saudis did more last week to lower oil prices than liberals in Congress did.

While liberals were voting to prevent domestic production from oil shale, the Saudis, following President Bush's visit, agreed to boost their oil output by 300,000 barrels a day. It won't fix the problem, but at least it won't make it worse, which is exactly what liberals in Congress did last week.

As Americans, we all need to ask ourselves the following: Which is it -- the Congress or Saudi Arabia -- that has a greater obligation to ease our energy prices? And which is the greater obstacle to energy independence and security?

The Left's Answer: More Pain, Not More Production

As I mentioned, the higher energy prices Americans are paying are the equivalent of a huge tax increase. One economist calculated that the price of oil rising from $80 a barrel to $100 a barrel had the same effect on Americans' pocket books as a $150 billion tax increase -- and the price of oil has risen an additional $27 since then!

So how is it that the liberals in Congress, faced with an opportunity like the one last week to lessen this burden on Americans, could reject it without a second thought?

Once again, the answer seems to boil down to three little words: "No we can't."

Change Jimmy Carter Can Believe In

Campaigning in Oregon last week, Senator Barack Obama seemed to forget his campaign theme of "Yes We Can," telling his fellow Americans that more pain -- not more production -- is the answer. He responded to a question about America's role in reducing global energy consumption like this:

"We can't tell [other countries], don't grow. We can't -- drive our SUVs and you know, eat as much as we want and keep our homes on you know, 72 degrees at all times, and whether we're living in the desert or we're living in the tundra, and then just expect that every other country's going to say OK."

I have two reactions to this.

First, I'm used to my doctor telling me I can't eat as much as I want, but it sounds eerie coming from a politician. Is the "No We Can't" Left planning to ban the buffet line as well?

Second, and more importantly, telling the next generation of Americans that they can't have the lifestyle that their parents enjoy is defeatist and wrong. It is a rejection of the energy, optimism and innovation that has made this nation great.

It's also all too similar to President Carter in February of 1977 when he called the energy shortage "permanent" and called on Americans to turn their thermostat down to "65 degrees in the daytime and 55 degrees at night."

Of course, the energy shortage was anything but permanent. Just like today, it was an artificial creation of stupid government policies. Ronald Reagan's first official act as President was to deregulate the oil industry. Oil prices dropped soon after.

I guess "Yes We Can" only applies to reenacting the Jimmy Carter presidency.

Americans Can Control Our Own Energy Destiny

Our energy and environment challenges are real. But America has the technological know-how and the entrepreneurial spirit to overcome them. And, as I pointed out last week, Americans overwhelmingly support more domestic production of energy to help ease gas prices.

We -- not the Saudis or the oil companies -- control our energy future. We just need the political will to do so.

High energy prices aren't theoretical, they have real consequences for real people. The answer, to paraphrase Ronald Reagan, isn't easy, but it's simple -- so simple it could fit on a bumper sticker:

P.S. -- In another step toward judicial dictatorship, the California Supreme Court ruled last week to overturn the will of the California voters and legalize same-sex marriage. Four justices ruled to create a right to same-sex marriage in the California Constitution and in doing so overruled the will of 4,618,673 California voters (61 percent) who voted to limit marriage to one man and one woman in 2000. That's the bad news. The good news is that there is already an initiative to overturn the ruling on the November ballot in California. It should be supported. Redefining marriage is too big an issue to be left to four judges.

P.P.S. -- An innovative program in Atlanta that gives students a financial incentive to be tutored in math and science is showing real results. Jackie Cushman, one of the founders of the "Learn and Earn" Program and my daughter, tells the stories of 34 students whose lives are being changed here. I'm very proud of her.

P.P.P.S. -- I gave a number of speeches last week, which you can watch below.

Can someone explain this to me:
1) If big oil controls drilling why is it in their best interests to have cheap oil?
2) Is not big oil only accountable to shareholders and making as big a profit as possible and not to the american people as a whole?
3) should not the american people control the domestic supply in order to manipulate the market in their best interests?

I must address the post from "modtop":

If every SUV got 60MPG, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But since they don't, we are all feeling the pain of speculation. And yes I do mean financial speculation. Oil Demand hasn't Doubled since last fall.

"Hey, the reality is, is that demand hasn't spiked 250% in the last 2 years. Yes, China & India have seen demand increase, but the economic models have been forecasting this for the last 10 years. "

When you compare percentage of increase with demand it is NOT one for one. Here is an analogy to explain: If you put 100 billionaires on a ship that has space for 100 of them on life boats in the event of a disaster and then auction off the seats, with a minimum bid of $1 per seat, they will all bid $1. If there are only 99 seats available the poorest billionaire will be left out as they will all bid everything they have for a seat. This is the way it works. We do not have to add very much oil to the worlds reserves to bring the price down. We do need to add something. I am not holding my breath, nor am I going to depend on incumbents to solve any of this country's problems. I am looking for NEW talent! I am not looking at Sen. O! I really don't see anyone to vote for...I do see hope in the unintended consequences.

The unintended consequences are that Americans are starting to realize that there are laws of physics that we are strictly tied to. A 4,000 lb. vehicle can not get 100+ miles to the gallon even if everything is perfect. Electric cars powered by the sun? Not going to happen! Electric cars powered by natural gas (NG) powered steam plants? Stupid!! You lose about 30% by converting the potential energy of the NG to electricity, as opposed to just burning the NG in the car. People are also starting to see that global warming is all hype and no substance...I am not sure they know why, yet...I think we all get it.

By projo59 @ Thursday, June 05, 2008 10:10 PM
I was outraged as I listened to John Kerry being interviewed about the Boxer-Warner-Lieberman bill. He indicated that we need this piece of legislation to save us from ourselves...to save the planet! What America needs is to get rid of him and his collaborators. What America needs is to raise up in arms against these politicians who obviously know NOTHING about economics. I swear they have their heads up their you know what! Honestly they are breading disaster. Our economy is hanging by a thread...it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize the recipe for disaster is everywhere one turns. I suppose Mr Kerry is not worried about the economy, nor the cost of gas for his car, fuel for his jet, or how he will heat or cool his numerous homes, because he lives on Ms. Heinz's fortune (perhaps a lobbyist or two have added to his great fortune as well) If the American masses could be so lucky as to abide by his standard of living! It's time we kick all these privileged, self-serving politicians OUT. We need change. i AGREE WE NEED TO VOTE EVERYONE OF THE BASTARDS OUT!!! I might add that the apathy and indifference of the average American is disturbing. Why is there not a greater out cry from the people? We apparently have enjoyed prosperity for so long that it is being taken for granted?

By Arizonajake @ Wednesday, June 04, 2008 12:14 AM
We have a chance this November to start turning things around. How? By convincing everyone you know (and doing so yourself) to vote AGAINST EVERY incumbant in EVERY election at every level all the way to the top. It is time to get rid of the careeer politicians and elect those who have not yet become comfortable with and adept at debasing everything this country stands for. Then, with a whole new legislative body we start pushing for term limits in ALL ELECTED POSITIONS; especially the House and Senate just as is already established for the Presidency. No person should make a lifetime career of living off the public's tax money.

Like many Americans past and present, I've asked only to Live my Life Free, I Have NEVER hurt anyone in anything I do.................. I have supported political reform, I voted, I've marched and I've spoke about my feelings.. through the years I've seen hundreds of thousands that agree with my thoughts on things................................ I respect Mr.G and all his has tried to do for our Country............ Unfortunately, I think we have gone beyond the point where ANY Politician can help us, It's time for Back Bone and Honesty, and I do not believe there is One Single Politician that has either of these qualities......................... The time has come when our Gov't no longer cares about We The People................... and as Americans, that leaves us only one choice............... You decide where you sit on the matter... for a Gov't that is made up of Professional Politicians who care only for themselves, their Families and their friends, or for a Free America where Each And EVERY Person is help accountable AND Responsible for their actions and words............. when the Gov't ceases caring for the People as it is charged, Revolution by the Common People is sometimes the only solution left................. No offense guys, but self interest is the number 1 motivator for most people. In order to get outside our comfort zones, rely on oil, it takes more than a small kick in the pants.

If every SUV got 60MPG, we wouldn't be having this discussion. But since they don't, we are all feeling the pain of speculation. And yes I do mean financial speculation. Oil Demand hasn't Doubled since last fall.

Hey, the reality is, is that demand hasn't spiked 250% in the last 2 years. Yes, China & India have seen demand increase, but the economic models have been forecasting this for the last 10 years.

The main reason that diesel fuel has doubled in the last 2 years is that most of the fuel produced here is sent to Europe & Asia since the PROFIT is higher over their than here. This is nothing new. When Europe's fuel is 3 times our costs (even with 45%+ taxes) the oil companies make more there than here. Again Self Interest is the motivator is this.

If we stop crying about the "Good Old Days" and start developing the replacement technologies we could get there from here without a lot of effort. It WILL cost us as a society and individually, but, as Newt says "Our energy and environment challenges are real. But America has the technological know-how and the entrepreneurial spirit to overcome them. "

So quite focusing on the past and look to the future. New technologies mean more businesses, more jobs, more money for everyone. It may also, incidentally, improves the ecology as it improves our economy!

By jdawg @ Saturday, May 31, 2008 12:39 PM
I wrote a letter to the Joint Economic Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee basically venting my frustrations. Here is what I wrote:
--------------------------------------

Just in case you haven't noticed, gas prices continue to get higher and higher. There is a petition going on and you really should read the comments. You can see them here, if you really care: http://www.gaspriceprotest.com/view_all.php.

The bottom line is this: Oil companies are not permitted to drill anywhere because of the environmentalists wackos, production has been cut 50 percent since the 80's, you people in Congress continue to burden oil companies with high taxes and regulations making it impossible for them to produce. Then you ban the light bulb and grill the oil companies regarding the high price of gas. You have heard of supply and demand, right? Do you not realize that the ONLY way to fix this is to increase the supply to meet demand? I learned that in my first year of college economics, yet Congress seems to have never heard of it. Sometimes I think that either Congress is incompetent or is destroying America on purpose. Americans are getting flat sick and tired of a Congress that can't seem to do anything right, can't fix anything, and only makes things worse on the American people in order to kowtow to the ACLU and the Sierra Club. Enough is enough.

Why is it that China can drill off our coasts and in the Gulf, but we can't? Why is it okay for Saudi Arabia to pull oil out of thier ground but not okay for us? Why is it that the former Soviet Union is reducing the tax and regulatory burden on thier oil companies while we increase that burden on ours? This seems a bit upside-down to me. And then I hear Maxine Waters talking about nationalizing the oil companies. Now we hear about this crazy "cap and trade" that threatens to raise gas prices even higher - by as much as 3 dollars per gallon or more. And, on your web site, you seem to blame the war in Iraq for high gas prices.

Do you not realize that literally everything is tied to the price of oil? Food prices are going up because it costs more to get those goods to market. People are losing thier jobs or can't get to the jobs that pay because of the high price of gas. The government takes much more of a gallon of gas in taxes than the oil companies in profit. In fact, oil companies pay more in taxes than the bottom 75 percent of taxpayers. Do you not know this? Or is it more important to score points with the Sierra Club than it is to fix this problem?

You were elected to Congress to work for the American people, not the radical left-wing environmentalists. You said you had a plan to reduce gas prices, but you have yet to produce that plan and all you do is make things worse. Do the right thing for the country. We are the greatest country on earth, and we should not be paying what we are for gas. Oil companies make this nation work. Get off thier backs - let them drill - here in the US, and NOW! Open ANWR, build new refineries, tell the environmentalists to go away and quit taking thier blood money.

And for God's sakes, do it NOW! We can't afford another "fix" from Congress.

The solution is so simple, yet it seems you are more interested in attacking the Bush Administration and catering to the radical left who want to destroy America than you are with actually doing something right.

Thank you for this opportunity to allow me to be heard.
---------------------------------------
Naturally, that was before I heard of this effort. We need to let these people know that we are watching them and hold thier feet to the fire. It's time for the GOP to grow a backbone and stand up to the socialists in the Democrat party. I, for one, have had enough!

By johnfromjersey @ Wednesday, May 28, 2008 8:00 AM
Ah yes, the lobby, the cancer of American politics. This disease must be removed much like a tumor, no more can we the people allow so few to wield so much power. Actually, the whole point of this thread is how WTP have been held captive for so long, by a few that wish America to revert to 18th century living. The environmentalist extremists have literally stopped the progress America has made since the end of WWll. While I understand that our constitution allows all Americans to voice their opinions about the course America takes, and that is precious enough to fight to the death for, as so many great young men have done, but, to make a business out of it is beyond disgraceful. IMHO the very idea of throwing wads of money at our legislators so your company can sell more deodorant is tantamount to throwing used condoms at a church. I must ask, "what the hell has happened to my country?" I remember growing up in a small town in central Jersey in the 50's. Children could and did play most anywhere. All of us kids would roam the neighborhood playing, never in fear of molesters, never worrying about being pulled into a car, never to be seen again. Now, you'd think that these scum were an endangered species. Drunk drivers, yes, there were probably some, but, they knew that if they caused too much harm, there would be consequences, dire ones, now, there are people driving around with 8 or 10 DUI'S under their belt, does anyone else see a problem here? or is it just me. It seems that now, law and order is doled out according to how much money you have. My friends, it is up to us, "we the people", if we don't demand that our government put a stop to all of this nonsense, I fear that WTP will no longer have a say in anything. In this age of instant communication, WTP cannot, and should not blame anyone except ourselves, we have been good citizens, paid our taxes, fought for our country, and worked hard to make America the great nation it is. If we continue to sit back and allow these vultures, (congress) to eat away at out liberties, steal our money, and ignore our will, then maybe we don't deserve the great nation we have.

By Mr. D @ Tuesday, May 27, 2008 8:15 PM
Well said johnfromjersey! I agree with everything you have said. What do you think about eliminating the retirement program as well? Another thing is let them live by the rules those who work for gov't must live by and not allow them to work for anyone, or lobby for anyone, or make any personal gain from contacts made while in office for two to five years after they leave office?

By xtremetty @ Tuesday, May 27, 2008 5:23 PM
I completely agree. How do we sue our own government? I haven't been too much of an activist since college but lately it's been getting to be too much to bare. Watching congress blame all the wrong people for the current state. Seeing them drill the oil company execs for the prices of gas when they should be drilling domestic oil. Threatening to sue OPEC for oil prices and limiting oil production. We, the people, should be suing congress for limiting our own domestic oil production, stopping the construction of more efficient oil refineries, and prohibiting construction of clean nuclear power plants. They seem to have their own agenda because it is not that of the people that put them into office. I understand the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the oil but the unreasonable environmentalists are not the only ones screaming now. Can't congress see the plight of the economy. Rising gas prices contribute to the increase of prices for everything in our everyday life. Airlines are going out of business and/or decreasing the number of flights. It's like they have never taken a single class on economics or have any fiscal common sense whatsoever. If they had to deal with the economy as if it were their own money I doubt they would do things the same way.

By johnfromjersey @ Tuesday, May 27, 2008 1:15 PM
To: "We the people"
This debate is more proof that our elected officials have no regard for us, they continue to play politics for their own gain, and once again, "we the people" must choose between filling our fuel tanks, and having the means to eat dinner out once a week. If I'm not mistaken, congress has been aware of the mounting problems with America's energy needs for many years, yet, now, in 2008, fuel prices are growing daily. We the people must demand more from the "good old boys" club, known as congress, because they are more interested in getting re-elected, than doing the people's business. As I see it, the only way that "we the people" can once again have our voices heard, is by demanding term limits for all elected officials. Term limits will accomplish more, in one fell swoop, than all the debates we can have on these blogs. Term limits will send a very strong message that "we the people" will no longer accept the incompetence that has been forced upon us by men and women, so out of touch with us, that they would rather bicker over party lines, than do the right thing for America. Do the right thing for yourselves, and America , vote no to all incumbents this next election, vote for real change, the kind that will bring America back to what it was intended from it's founding, an America that set's the standards for the rest of the world to follow. America doesn't need more lawyers who's intent is to confuse us with 90 pages of text to say "yes" or "no". America needs plumbers, and bricklayers, and garbage men, and auto workers as well. People who understand what living on a budget entails, people who make decisions every day to make do with what they've got, not print more money, or amend another bill that hides the truth from "we the people" who've sent them there. America is the greatest nation in the world, bar none. We've helped more people, fed more people, cured more people, than all the nations combined. That is our history, that is our legacy, that is our mandate. In conclusion, it is my opinion that demanding term limits for all of congress is the only way "we the people" will ever be taken seriously.

Well said, gentlemanonthemove (I think I got that right?). Can anyone tell me the difference between a Republican and a Democrat? As far as I can tell it looks like a WWE wrestling match...predetermined and scripted.

I often look at the persuasiveness of lobbyists and caught myself thinking how nice it would be to hire some lobbyists to represent the American people...then I wake up and realize that is what my Congressmen and President are supposed to be doing!

By gentlemanmovinon @ Friday, May 23, 2008 1:34 PM
it is not enough to say he posted a policy in 2001. What has he done to push the policy? What did the Republican controlled Congress do? Why didn't He make an address to the nation outlining plan and challenge the people to send their representatives a message to get behind it. But the truth is it does not matter who is to blame. The bottom line is that action needs to be taken now. Bush should come out now and make a challenge the way Kennedy challenged us to go to the moon. He should make a address to the nation and challenge the nation to become energy independent in 10 years and back it up with funding. He should ask the people to support his plan by contacting their representatives. It is called leadership. You cannot blame the Democrats. They did not control the White House, and the Congress in 2001; there were many years the Republicans could have pushed a policy through by going to the people. But they were too busy discovering once they took power how great it is to be a big spender and bring home pork to stay in power! He needs to stop being President of Iraq and get back to being President of the United States in my opinion.

By genoman @ Friday, May 23, 2008 12:31 PM
President Bush did present a comprehensive energy policy in May, 2001. We let the Left destroy that policy not by using logic but by attacking it, as oil and energy executives met with Cheney's energy task force in private.

The President did present a great policy and gave it to Congress, as a framework to build upon. Congress shot it down and never provided us with an alternative. We are to blame, as that policy would have provided more supply by now and lower costs to our families. But we must move forward from this point.

Please google White House Energy Policy, May 2001 for more information.

Survival and starvation are great motivators for taking action. My children's generation (30's) are going to figure this out the hard way. I tell my students that the problems they face in the future will be some of the most difficult in the history of our country. As a challenge, I also tell them that they are likely the least prepared generation for tough times. Let's look at some of these failures of our generation they will inherit:
1) Their parents and grandparents dependent on a failing Social Security and Medicare system (dependent because the gov't took their ability to provide for their own future away).
2) Lack of affordable energy and total confusion on how to fix the problems.
3) Infrastructure that is obsolete and inadequate due to 50 years of neglect. (roads, ports, airports, bridges...)
4) A larger percentage of the population in prison or dependents of those in prison.
5) An increased percentage of socially dependent citizens due to 60 years of entitlement induced birthrates (those who get paid to stay home and have babies while those with educations and good work ethics work to pay for their babies...this is a complex issue and one must understand the population I have worked with in the past...)
6) A totally crippled education system that has dumbed down the populous through bureaucratic control over the 5 or 6 decades.
7) A weakened presence in the world to the effect that little countries dictate our future.
8) A National Debt that they will never be able to pay off.
9) Inability to attract invest from overseas.
I could go on, but it's too depressing. All of problems could be corrected now if we had the leadership. Politically, it seems to be suicidal to recognize and correct situations before they occur. Newt paid a huge price for this. Harley2, wedge, and ericrobinson all see these things. Why can't the people that are supposed to represent see them? Here's something to think about. If I were to go out and assemble a small, diesel powered car, and then drive around the neighborhood collecting waste cooking oil from neighbors and restaurants, and then process that oil into bio-diesel, what do you think would happen? I would not be congratulated by local authorities for my efforts to recycle, or to reduce national petroleum use. I would, more likely, be arrested, because I didn't do an environmental impact study, obtain hazardous material (vegetable oil) handling permits, didn't get DOT /CARB certification for the modifications on the car, and DIDN'T pay the taxes I would had I simply used petroleum fuel from one of the state sanctioned energy monopolies. In fact, it is likely that my treatment by "our" govt. would have been better had I, instead, raped and robbed someone for the money to subsidize my transportation needs. Government doesn't "solve" problems, it justifies its existence by managing them. Anyone who actually tries to solve a problem is treated like a heretic. If you don't believe me, just consider the public school systems in California.

By Mr. D @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 8:25 PM
Harley2, I share your frustration! I just saw Maxine Waters threaten the oil executives with nationalizing their companies. If she wants to resort to archaic, un-American ideas like that she might want to hide when we all march on Washington someday.

The America I know allows people the freedom and responsibility to live, work, and take care of their families without interference. I'll have to admit we have gone way downhill since the day I bought my first piece of property for $500 and a used car. How do we take back the control of this country? I know that the gov't is taking about 1/2 of my money and they repay me with more bondage. Just as "voice" said, why can't we vote, or at least poll the issues at hand, by phone? I think that would be a great idea.

By voice @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 5:39 PM
As you see just like this blog opinions, issues, knowledge and agendas differ. And this is no different than our 'big government'. So my question to all of us is what are we going to do about this crisis that goes much deeper than gas prices? I think we need to ask our selves a few real questions:

Do our elected officials represent 'we the people'?

Do you trust our Government?

Do you feel more like a walking ATM for government use?

Well there is one way to get the governments attention and that is to cut them off finacially. Yes, were you aware that we are not required to pay personal income tax? It's true. For almost 100 years we have been lied to and are being governed by intimidation and fear...and our elected officials are aware of this. Feel free to investigate this. One resource is: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1656880303867390173

Do you think if you and I stopped the government ATM they would listen? Sure they would. Knowledge is key. We do have power IF we were to all commit. Action.

Another point as silly as this may sound. Why doesn't the government replace our useless 'big government' that is suppose to represent you and me and create a system for us to vote on issues? I mean really, we phone and text in votes for American Idols why not for real issues that effect us?

Drilling will produce immediate and long term benefits toward lowering the price of fuel in our economy. Admitedly, the "ramp-up" time to bring new crude discoveries to market may be long. However, once a threat of a significant increase in crude supply to OPEC and other oil producers is perceived, they will move more of their oil to market fearing the increased supply will depress the future market price.

To further reduce crude prices, we must create a significant incentive, ($100 billion dollars or more) to the individual(s) that develop a viable, sustainable non petroleum energy source for our transportation needs. When such technology is available, crude prices will fall and the foundation of the economies of these oil producing nations will be debased. Exchange rates will flip in favor of the dollar and our econmomy will soar reducing the national debt through revenues produced by the robust economy, not additional taxation.

You know I've been reading all these good Idea's on what the goverment should do an I agree with them. But how is the problem solved ? I'm afraid the damage is so bad that we will never see people educated that America is great. That freedom with capitalism is our creed not just another way of living. Hell politicians an media talk about comunisim an socialism as if it's the future. With each new law endorsed by special intrest that limits my pursuit of happiness. Then thats one more American dream discouraged. Now your American dream may be diffrent than mine.Any paticular group taking your freedoms ? An is there a group you support taking mine. We Americans have the right to fail.We also have the right to exceed our exspectations. How did we give away our rights to evil do'ers. I voted consevative/pro america ,pro christian .Who failed who an who lied to us.
Sorry ! Just pissed off .

I'm not an economist nor am I a politician...I'm a math and science teacher.

I do think your ideas would work..we would just have to declare a state of emergency to cut through all the bureaucracies that are in place to prevent us from moving forward. It would take about two years to develop the oil fields in Alaska. The only problem is it would take eight to ten years to fill out all of the paper work and complete all of the studies to get the approval to begin construction. More than likely the regulatory agencies would probably attempt to duplicate the tactics used by the nuclear regulators in the 70's and prevent the completion of the project. In the 70"s they changed the regulations every two weeks (maybe an exaggeration) making it nearly impossible to complete...many of these projects were abandoned.

I have very little confidence in our gov't to anything except pad their own pockets and leave us with the check. The only idea I have seen that does not address the problem is lowering the speed limit. The answers to our energy problems are going to be "all of the above".

It's not just about drilling for more oil. It is about drilling for oil, adding new refineries, building many new nuclear power plants (suspending new regulation on nuclear power plants), utilizing all of the technology we have including liquefied coal, solar, wind, and tidal power. Our energy situation has been ignored for as long as our problems with Social Security have been overlooked. I don't see anything getting fixed until the American people do organize a march on Washington. When that happens...put it like this, I sure wouldn't want to be part of the problem.

By ChrisinTN @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 11:41 AM
I just got on this site, and I am not sure if this has all been suggested, but someone tell me why this won't work, and how we can get our government to move on it:

1) Eliminate the $17B/year in tax breaks to Oil Companies. (Why do we give breaks to entities that hold Americans as economic hostages?)
2) Regulate the amount that oil companies are allowed to charge, in order to get and keep gas prices at or below $2/gallon. The oil companies are capable of doing it, but will not unless forced to. (I am not a fan of Gov. regulation, but in a case where it involves a product that impacts our very survival, it might become necessary.)
3) Immediately begin drilling off our costs and in the Yukon (China is already drilling 60 miles off of OUR cost in Cuban waters...What ecology are we helping by letting that oil go to another, hostile, country? If oil is going to be drilled off the Continental Shelf, shouldn't we get it?)
4) Secure the oil reserves in the Antarctic before Russia tries to take that oil.
5) Make OPEC aware that we will continue to buy from them AT A PRICE WE SET if they want to do business with us and remain in our good graces and protection. If not, no matter, we have our own. - The USA needs to be in control!

OPEC countries, including Saudi Arabia are not our friends. They patronize us publically and politically to get our money and our protection, while they are successfully undermining our economy and ultimately positioning the greatest country in the world for a fall.

If we do these things, we can get prices under control within months, and by drilling our own oil, we can be self-sufficient within 2 or 3 years, and stay that way forever. Then, as we are self-sufficient and our economy is recovered, it will be much easier to intelligently pursue alternative energy so that we can eventually dramatically reduce our dependency on oil.

I'm not an economist, but it makes sense to me. Help me out...

By hal_reid @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 11:17 AM
Any plan to go after any energy source here in the US should include a provision that no American energy is exported.

By gentlemanmovinon @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 9:38 AM
The only way we can get our ineffective government to take action and allow drilling for oil in an environmentally friendly way is to have a march on Washington. What an idiotic government we have. We have a shortage of oil; but we cannot drill for oil we have in our own country. We can secure Iraq's borders; but cannot even secure our own despite the will of the people demanding the government to act!!!!!!!!

And another thing, how pathetic it is for Bush (who i voted for twice) to go down to the 82nd Airborne for a photo op with troops to demand money for his war the day after Republican's followed his lead and voted against the GI Bill for those same soldiers!! And then McCain also supports not providing the GI Bill for the troops; he has lost my vote. So they think the volunteer soldiers many of whom are on their third and fourth tours of duty are going to stay in the military for another four years fighting a war that has already achieved what it was intended to do. And now i see they are even bringing back troops that got out of the Army. So the Government thinks the small volunteer Army is in indefinite servitude? Republicans have lost the military vote! And yes those troops may be standing behind the President; but that does not mean they support him. They have no choice but to stand there for his photo shoot!

Now as to the war that Bush wants to keep pouring billions of dolloars down a rat hole. Lets see the war was to prevent Hussein from having weapons of mass destruction. None were there. We wanted to get Hussein. We got him. That was the original mission. Mission was truly accomplished. Americans signed up to kill the SoBs who attacked us. We never signed up to make Iraq and Afganistan into beautiful democracies which they NEVER will be. But we went beyond the original mission to let Iraqis have a constitution, elections, we trained their army, their police, the government is in power. The war was won. We are not in a war now we are in a peace keeping mission trying to get people to live together who hate each other's guts and have been this way for centuries! We accomplished the mission and gave the Iraqis freedom, THEY chose to use their freedom to fight centuries old grudges! Enough already!!
How about this novel idea. How about go after Bin Laden who is setting fat and happy in Pakistan. I seem to recall that we went to war to go after him. And if Bush attacks Iran with a preemptive strike, he should be impeached. That would be the same kind of attack that the Japanese made on us at Pearl Harbor - their attack was meant to be a preemptive attack against our naval power.

I do not know when the Republicans will learn that Bush is the reason their party is going down with the ship!
Here we are in a economic down turn and no speech from Bush but he gives the OPEC countries advise on their economies. We are in a crisis with fuel and no address to the nation with a plan. No instead, single minded Bush goes to Fort Bragg to demand more money to pour down that rat hole in Iraq when 80% of the people in this democracy have told him it is time to end our activity there. How ironic it is for Bush to go to the middle east and talk of his vision of democracy when in this democracy he ignores the will of the people and acts like an imperial President/Decider. NO Mr Bush, you will not be viewed by History as another Truman. You will be viewed as one of the worst Presidents we have ever had. As for me, i am voting Libertarian for now on. The Libertarian party needs to replace the Republican party. The Republican party is a party of greedy Pols who like power more than the like doing the real work of the people and standing up for conservative values. It is so laughable that they claim to be fiscally conservative! And the problem with them coming up with a new contract with America is that who would believe them after having had the Congress and the White house all these years and they failed to do anything they promised? No the Republican party needs to just get out of the way and let a new Party join the political contest.

By JoeHol @ Thursday, May 22, 2008 9:37 AM
Where is the President? It seems to me NOW would be the perfect time for the President to show some leadership. Why doesn’t the President call and primetime news conference and outline a comprehensive plan to reduce our energy dependence? Explain to the American people how drilling in Anwar, increasing refinery capacity, building nuclear power planets and investing in alternative energies directly effect their pocketbook. Outline a plan of bold ideas to increase energy supply, all the while growing America’s conservation effort. When the left takes to the airwaves the next day slamming the President’s plan, they will be the ones on the wrong side of the fence. The President should also lay out specific dates he wants the laws passed by and call regular primetime press conferences to update the American people. During each conference explain to the American people how much the delay in passing the bills are costing them.

AubreyJ818, Great Post. I agree 100%.

By Mr. D @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 6:28 PM
If you reduce the speed by 20% you increase the time of travel by 20%. Increasing the time of travel increases the number of cars on the road at a given time. This is what we learned the last time we tried it. We went back to the 70 mph speed limit to reduce travel time and congestion.
Whoever suggested that must work for the oil companies and wants to protect their profit margins...

By ericrobinson @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 1:21 PM
You wanna create some real change? Force all government employees to use public transportation. Anyone out there notice the difference in traffic on govt. holidays? Anyone ever try to find parking around a govt. building? They are the only segment of society that can easily be managed in the public transit system. We know where they live and where they work, and we should manage their transportation as simply another facet of govt. costs.

By ericrobinson @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 1:14 PM
What does a national 55 mph actually accomplish? It costs the economy billions of dollars a day in wasted or lost man hours. It conserves nothing. If we don't create new sources of BTUs, "conservation" simply slows down the economy and extends the payment plans to the same energy suppliers who are gouging us today. We need increased, new and innovative domestic sources of energy, or we need a new government.

By harley2 @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 1:02 PM
55 mph ! I think your budy in the 70's tried that . Uh Jimmy Carter I belive. That really worked well.

By febjb @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 12:20 PM
a 55 mph National Speed Limit would greatly reduce the OIL / GASOLINE problem, as follows:

1. Save millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel,
2. Reduce demand for oil, including possible price reduction,
3. Reduce pollution,
4. Save lives, by reducing fatal injuries from high speed accidents,
5. Reduce payments to foreign providers,
6. Take pressure off refineries, to produce more product,
7. Reduce cost to the end users,
8. Slow down inflation, on most all farm and manufactured products,
9. ETC.

An Indianapolis based trucking company (CELADON) has already instructed their drivers to reduce highway speeds, in order to reduce fuel costs.

TO ME, LOWERING SPEED LIMITS IS A 'NO BRAINER". Why is this not being discussed on the various News programs?

By Mr. D @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 11:33 AM
Correction: ...people to vote...

Also a comment on conserving energy.

Energy conservation proposals only preserve the status quo. If this is the plan, then the plan is to maintain high prices and profits for the oil companies.

Why is it that I never hear anything about allowing commercial ships to "go nuclear" like our military ships? We have got to get over our fear of technology...

By Mr. D @ Wednesday, May 21, 2008 11:26 AM
You've nailed it! I still can not figure out why Congress does not get this! Why is it necessary for us to contact these people do vote correctly on issues as obvious as these?

Here is another question...Why do we bury nuclear waste (spent rods) instead of recycling them? It seems that we are into recycling everything else except for spent nuclear rods. Could it be that it is because of the billion dollar industry and massive bureaucracy that was created to store such material? We do this in spite of the hazards and security issues that are involved in such an industry.

There are too many questions like these. I am beginning to believe that I work for the Government as opposed to them working for me. It seems as though our cries fall on deaf ears.

By AubreyJ818 @ Tuesday, May 20, 2008 10:24 PM
What I can not understand is how in the HECK we can drill for oil and gas all over this country... even in our cities in some places... yet the billions of barrels of oil reserves in the Gulf of Mexico are just sitting there waiting for us to tap... if only we were allowed to go and get it.

The way I see it is all Congress is doing is letting other countries come in near us and side drill and siphon away our reserves in the Gulf of Mexico and then turn around and charge us for our own oil and gas. Now WHO VOTED these brilliant people into office!!!?

What about the ANWAR Oil Fields?

Our very own ANWAR Oil Fields, are just awaiting for us to tap into its billions of barrels of oil reserves too... as soon as Congress gets serious and realistic about fixing our Energy needs and lets us go and get.

How about New Oil Refineries?

One can only note that we have not built a single new Oil Refinery in the past 30 years... yet we pay outrages prices everyday for all the oil those Oil Tankers from the Middle East ship us. We spend over $1,000,000,000.00 a day on imports!

And how about Nuclear Energy?

Although the United States has the most nuclear capacity of any nation in the world today, not one new commercial reactor has come on line since May 1996 when the Watt’s Bar Reactor in Tennessee, owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, came on line.

Yes sir... a few more Commercial Reactors would be mighty helpful to us today... if only Congress and a few of the locals would let us build them.

So again I find myself typing these following words...

* Vote DBD for a Better Tomorrow *
DRILL Wells... BUILD new Refineries/Plants... and DEVELOP New Technologies for a better, Energy Independent, Tomorrow.

Come ON America!!! We GOT to stop all this in-house fighting on who has the best ideas on Energy Policy and start spreading out an umbrella of all workable ideas that will fix our energy problems TODAY and in the near/long-term future!

Everytime you drive by a gas station and see those out of sight gas prices, remember this... Talk-- talk-- talk... and NO ACTION... is NOT CHEAP! We got to start Drilling, Building and Developing new... clean technologies!!!

Like me... have you noticed that we are now starting to pay dearly for everything from gas at the pumps down to the food on our tables... all because of talk, but never any action out of congress over these last few decades...?

Both parties can find fault within... So stop pointing fingers at each other and start working together and finally get some really good laws past to help bring these crazy prices back down to something we can all live with.

I’ll say it again-
America...
VOTE DBD for a Better Tomorrow

Demand It!!!
Your Wallet/Purse depends on it.

Let's see. Hmmm, reduce the number of dollars spread around the world, and increase the value of the dollar? Reduce inflation here? Reduce the number of dollars that end up in the hands of our enemies? Increase the number of dollars that stay in the hands of our own people? If the American people don't demand that Congress take action on this immediately, they deserve to live in poverty.

By richardnday @ Tuesday, May 20, 2008 2:58 PM
They just look and sound like idiots. Their real reasons for disallowing drilling is to bring about a change in the government.

They want Bush and the Republicans out of office - at any price.

By Mr. D @ Tuesday, May 20, 2008 2:09 PM
For a long time I have wondered if the politicians that make the decisions for our great country are criminals or idiots. The jury is still out. I do think, in some sick way, they (the Left) do benefit from their destructive policy making.

Has anyone noticed that there are numerous high-rise apartment buildings going up, in cities across America, and that the prices on the units are increasing with the gas prices? Could it be that the artificial shortfall of energy supplies are designed to move people out of the rural communities and into the city? I am not sure if the Left is intelligent enough to orchestrate such a diabolical plan, but that is what is happening.

Last week I watched and listened as members of the Senate explained that the high price of oil was not a result of a shortage in supply, but a result of speculators driving the price higher. This was their argument against opening ANWR up supplying one million barrels per day of crude oil for America's future. Two seconds later they voted overwhelmingly to suspend filling the Strategic Reserve, adding seventy thousand barrels of crude per day to the economy which they said would reduce the price of gas by five cents a gallon????? Do they think we are the idiots!

I am afraid that there will unintended consequences for the policies we have put into place.
