Boxer-Warner-Lieberman will raise gas prices and create a massive special-interest-favoring, lobbyist-controlled, political pork dispensing machine dressed up as environmentalism.

But Boxer-Warner-Lieberman isn't environmentalism; it's pork barrel politics. It's a pig in green. Call your Senators and tell them to vote to Stop the Green Pig.

"Meals on Wheels" Charities are Losing Volunteer Drivers to High Gas Prices

While some members of Congress are busy cooking up new ways to reward their political supporters, working Americans are suffering.

  • A small appliance repair businessman in Delhi, New York is threatened with going out of business because of the miles he has to log in his car.


  • Independent truck drivers in Illinois are working just to cover their costs, one breakdown away from losing their routes.


  • A church in Rogers, Arkansas is seeing less in the offering plate because "all the giving is going in the gas tank."


  • Police officers in Tulsa, Oklahoma are forced to patrol their beats on bicycles.


  • A "meals on wheels" charity in Amarillo, Texas is losing volunteers willing to drive meals to those who need them.


  • Families across America give up vacations, give up eating out, give up entertainment and night school - even give up meals - because of the high price of gasoline.

These are real stories of real Americans whose lives are being disrupted by high gas prices. Congress: Are you listening?

"The most extensive government reorganization of the American economy since the 1930s"

I've long maintained that there are two ways to protect the environment: There is the old-style, command and control, government regulation and litigation approach. Or there is the new way which uses technology, innovation and incentives to protect our environment.

Of these two approaches, the Boxer-Warner-Lieberman bill is definitely of the old school. The Wall Street Journal calls it "the most extensive government reorganization of the American economy since the 1930s."

The bill aims to reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere by 66% in 2050. To do this, it would have government set a limit on overall carbon emissions and issue "allowances" to businesses that specify how much carbon they produce.

Like Pork Barrel Politics? Wait Until You See Energy Pork Barrel Politics

And here's where we get into the Washington-style pork barrel politics. Half of these "allowances" will be auctioned off to businesses - a massive, up front tax that is expected to cost $3.32 trillion. Businesses will be forced to pass these indirect taxes along to consumers, of course, while Washington politicians decide which special interests will get a piece of the new $3.32 trillion revenue out of the politicians' gigantic new Green Piggybank.

Boxer-Warner-Lieberman is riddled with earmarks, both to redistribute new tax revenues to politically favored groups (for example, there is $136 billion earmarked for energy efficiency block grants to local governments) and for buying off industries that might otherwise put their armies of lobbyists to work to defeat the bill.

Bottom line: If you liked the pork and political-favor-ridden Farm Bill and Transportation bills, you're going to love the Boxer-Warner-Lieberman green pork bill.

Gas Prices Almost Double, Electricity Costs Up 44% Under Boxer-Warner-Lieberman

But most importantly, the cost of the new taxes imposed on businesses under Boxer-Warner-Lieberman will be passed on to the American people in the form of higher gas prices. How much higher?

The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) estimates that Boxer-Warner-Lieberman will increase the cost of a gallon of gas by as much as $3.25 by 2030.

Even the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the bill will increase the cost of gas.

What's more, the EPA also estimates that Boxer-Warner-Lieberman will increase electricity prices by 44% by 2030.

Too Much Pain, Too Little Gain. Whatever Happened to American Ingenuity?

Beyond energy pork barrel politics, the premise behind Boxer-Warner-Leiberman is to punish people into the future; to impose such painful costs that businesses and consumers will change their behavior.

But when we decided we wanted transcontinental railroads, we didn't start by raising the tax on stage coaches. We started by setting up incentives, both land and money, to encourage companies to build railroads.

Increasing the pain level isn't the way to go. Increasing the reward level for innovation and science and technology is.

Can Geoengineering Address Concerns About Global Warming?

One of the most intriguing and promising areas of scientific innovation today are methodologies to address concerns about global warming by something called geoengineering.

We need to know more about it, but the idea behind geoengineering is to release fine particles in or above the stratosphere that would then block a small fraction of the sunlight and thus reduce atmospheric temperature.

In other words, this is one method that holds the promise of addressing any threat from global warming at a fraction of the cost. Instead of imposing an estimated $1 trillion cost on the economy by Boxer-Warner-Lieberman, geoengineering holds forth the promise of addressing global warming concerns for just a few billion dollars a year. Instead of penalizing ordinary Americans, we would have an option to address global warming by rewarding scientific innovation.

My colleagues at the American Enterprise Institute are taking a closer look at geoengineering, and we should too.

With gas prices already at record highs, the last thing America needs is government regulation that will make gas prices higher, make Americans poorer, and make special interests even richer.

We need innovation, not regulation. We need motivating incentives, not punishing pain.

Our message should be: Bring on the American Ingenuity. Stop the green pig.

You obviously get it. Now, if we could only get the rest of the population to understand this.

First drive the price down, either by threat or by action vis a vis the Strategic Reserve.

Second, keep the threat on-going and alive by developing ANWR, so anytime we don't like the price, we crank it up and do it all over again.

Third, Drill like mad to keep us independent for the next decade.

Fourth, build Nuclear plants wherever we need them, utilizing all those highly skilled yet out of work auto workers. The plants will make electricity by day to heat our homes, and separate hydrogen from water by night to power our cars.

Control the price of oil, drill now, go nuke, and bring on the fuel cells. EEE GADS!!!-- A coherent Energy Policy, who'd a thunk it.

GREAT WORK with the Drill Here petition. The American people are starting to wake up. I believe that a way to get the politicians attention would be to bring up TREASON charges against those who oppose drilling here. That goes for those who oppose increased refining capacity as well. At $125/bbl, we ship $700 BILLION/yr to those who are our enemies or those who support our enemies. I'd start with Salazar in CO who opposed lifting the moritorium on oil shale exploration after Allard voted for lifting the ban. The politicians who have been bought by the Eco Terrorists are committing TREASON and charges should be brought. But, there is very little leadership on this issue. McCain voted against ANWR and supports Cap and Trade. The President has a Peak Oil investment banker (Matt Simmons) advising him on Energy policy. There are new discoveries being made virtually on a daily basis around the World in places never thought to have oil. Oil is a RENEWABLE resource NOT a fossil fuel. The Earth is making oil as we speak. The Russians know this and now they're 1 of the largest exporters in the world. They taught abiotic theory to the Vietnamese who made discoveries in BEDROCK. The Chinese and Brazilians have learned abiotic theory as well. Why haven't we??? Years ago, geologists thought the oil was created in the reservoirs where it was found. We now KNOW that not to be the case. Eugene Island is a great example. Geologists now KNOW the oil there vertically migrated some 12,000 feet before coming to rest in that reservoir. Who believes BILLIONS and BILLIONS of bbls of oil are the result of a few million decomposing dinosaurs? Investment bankers maybe but NOT serious scientists. Did Saudi Arabia have a disproportionate number of dinosaurs die there? NO. Actually, the faulting there is conducive to more oil vertically migrating from deeper in the Earth. Recently, we discovered Methane on Saturns moon Titan. Dinosaurs there too? Read Dr Gold's Book. Become enlightened as the Russians,Chinese, Brazilians,Vietnamese,and most of Africa have been. IT IS TREASON NOT TO DRILL AND REFINE HERE IN THE US.

The American people should know that our dependance on foriegn oil permitts the Middle East nations to live an extravagant life style. In Qatar, the people pay no taxes, they do not work, and they are paid to attend the university. We have more oil in the uSA than the entire Middle East and we are buying oil from these enemies who are financing the terrorist. These people are not our friends, they hate us. It is time to walk over the Wacko environmentalists and do what we need to do. Utilizing our resources will creat millions of jobs at home, keep U.S. Dollars at home, and cause a drop in energy costs. There is no reason for us not to use our resources, unless we prefer to lay down and roll over for the environmentalists. I have worked abroad for 38 years and my statements are well known by all who have experienced the abuses of the OPEC members. The U.S. oil companies do not set the price of oil. The OPEC producers are doing this. Since the alarm bells have began to ring in in the USA, none other than Saudi Arabia is calling for a meeting of producers and consumers. Believe me when I say that control is in the hands of Saudi Arabia. They control oil prices because we allow them to do so. It need not be this way, as we can prodcue our own oil and become energy independent in 5-years if we make the comittment.

Mr D, sorry, I guess I am ironically challenged today! In any case, I just through that figure out. Saudi Arabia is not giving away their oil to the oil companies and are filthy rich. So, if it's America's oil (as all oil should be under the US, not someone who owns the land above), shouldn't the US charge as much for the oil in ANWR and coastal areas as Saudi Arabia charges the oil companies for their oil? I don't know how much that is, the profit sharing, but it must be pretty good.

We don't even have to release the Strategic Oil reserves. All the President has to do is threaten to release them at an undisclosed time at the rate mentioned earlier. There will be panic selling of oil in the commodites market, because they don't want to be in oil when it is released. It serves the speculators right to get burned. The price will drop back to normal. If they don't get out, just sell once and watch them scurry. If I can figure thisout why can't our leaders???

John, the idea I presented is totally tongue in cheek. It is an example of the ideas that are floating about the country. Using corn to produce ethanol, natural gas to produce electricity, making electric cars that plug into a household current, and so on...are all examples of not understanding physics and science. All of these ideas shift blame and money to those who impose them on the unaware populous.

Adding a $50 surcharge to every barrel of oil produced by the oil companies would only add to the expense of oil. You can not increase the cost of production without increasing the cost of the product. Our problem is that we have not embraced the technology that we already possess. We have ran away from it.

BTW, let's be realistic, we can't drill our way to lower energy costs. The per barrel cost will simply be averaged in with the $150/barrel being paid, dropping the price of oil by dimes or a dollar or two, maybe. Drilling now won't save us money. But if it funds wind, solar, biodiesel, it could in the future. There's no way gas prices are going down any time soon, unless we engineer our way out of it. So let's tax the heck out of the oil coming from federal/state land and use that money to buy our energy independence. Democrats love this stuff and it might let them hold their nose and go for the money.

Newt, what is the amount per barrel that will be charged to oil companies for pulling the oil from the ground? Let's say we allow drilling on public lands, but the oil companies must pay $50/barrel for the oil they take. That's tens of $billions per year. That money could build a lot of solar/algae/wind farms over time, helping replace the need for the oil from other countries.

I'm sitting here reading about the air car...I'm hearing someone on TV talk about electric cars...I think I know what the answer is!

How about a car that runs on compressed air, is made of super light-weight material, compresses air by using it's own electricity, which is generated by solar panels on it's hood and trunk, coupled with a wind generator that would convert the air to electricity while moving, and have generators hooked to the braking system? We could even install massive batteries to store all the excess energy which we could use to power our homes!

Americans know little about Science and nothing about Physics! That is the problem. All of this "Green" talk is about making more money off of the mindless people who succumb to it's call...check out the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics...pay close attention to a thing called "ENTROPY".

CityCAT, $ 2.00 per load with say $ 75.00 tax added by the Feds would be more like it. It is time to get rid of the way our Government controls us, vote for the Fair Tax! Until that happens, it will only get worst.

and has a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the
CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor
units. MDI says it should cost only around $2 to fill the car up with
340 liters of air !

The Air Car will be starting production relatively soon, thanks t o
India's TATA Motors. Forget corn! There's fuel, there's renewable fuel,
and then there's user-renewable fuel! What can be better than air?

I would gladly buy and post one in my front yard. I live on a US highway in rural Georgia and plenty of folks would see it. If they were posted all over the U.S. (especially red states), maybe enough people would get off their La-Z-Boys and contact their do-nothing, owned-by-K-street reps and senators.

Drill Here-Drill Now should be part of a larger mandate for National Energy Independence. The primary initiative would be an immediate, major expansion of new nuclear power plants throughout the country. We will never keep pace with the energy needs of a growing population without a massive push for new nuclear facilities.

The good thing is, at some point the American people are going to suffer enough, and then they are going to turn on the Congress, the Bureaucrats, and the "Environmentalists" like our founding fathers turned on their government. Let's hope their fuses aren't so slow that they allow that same government to disarm them before they try and re-assert their freedom.

Sadly, politicians do not vote with their heads. They vote according to what will get them re-elected in the district they work in. So if the mindless masses want blue toilets made into law it will become the the issue du jour. They vote, enact, create bills, etc to get re-elected. Period. Although I agree 100% with Newt nothing in my Dem/Lib dominated area will change. There is too much money, power and benefits at stake.

I grew up on a farm, worked in construction, worked in the commercial fishing industry in Alaska, worked in highway maintenance (snow plow, among other things) and now I teach math and science. I have always been directly affected by the environment! There is one thing that I have found to absolutely true and that is "Mother nature has a tendency to even things out".

Could it be that global temperatures must rise in order to accommodate the increased demand for food to feed a growing population? The number greenhouse gas is water vapor NOT CO2!! Re-think the geoengeneering idea, it could result in unintended consequences as well as wasting tons of cash.

I saw a similar suggestion when reading on your website recently, but I think it bears repeating: Instead of the mammoth Cap & Trade Tax, it would be infinitely cheaper to organize a national industrial association or institute, perhaps somewhat parallel to the Manhattan Project, to further develop fuel cell technology and perhaps others. We could sell it to the world.

What would happen to the price of oil if we did the follow 2 things simultaneously:

1. Release for sale directly to US refineries at a fixed price of $50 per barrel 1,000,000 barrels per day from the Strategic Reserve (there are about 700,000,000 barrels there now).

AND

2. Announced that we will begin development on a new Strategic Reserve in a place called ANWR.?

Prices would drop overnight.

It would be as if a Cadillac dealer who received 100 cars per week and tried to sell them for 40K suddenly faced a competitor down the street who only received 10 cars per week but sold them at $10K. The guy selling cars at 40K would have to drop his prices immediately or risk not selling cars.

The beauty of this plan is:

It by-passes the commodities markets where all the speculation is

It floods the market tomorrow with cheap oil forcing the price down ( the refineries cannot handle much more than 1,000,000 barrels per day anyway) for at least 700 days.

It allows us to develop ANWR without ever having to pump a drop.

It sets up a threat that anytime the price of oil gets out of hand, we can drive it down again by repeating the process with the new Strategic reserve.

And best of all, it forces Democrats in an election year to either back lowering oil prices or look like they won''t help out the "little guy."

C'mon, Newt. Oil companies have whined there is not enough economic benefit to drill, and now they say the Congress is preventing them from drilling. When your commodity goes from $20 a barrel to $135 a barrel it would seem there must be lots of economic benefit. The real problem is the year 2000 changes in the commodity markets that undid 78 years of stable and self-correcting prices. Now, the oil markets are a crap shoot for the benefit of the speculative financial industry. Unfortunately, everything you buy goes higher when the oil markets are bloated with such an excess of speculators over producers so their excess becomes everyone's problem, too.

The first step in all this hype is to expose "global Warming' as the hoax it truely is. After that, all the rhetoric is meaningless. Eleminating all this hot air will do more good for the climate than anything else I can think of
