| Recognizing a Gangster Government and Dealing with It |
|

|
The Russian invasion of Georgia should have surprised no one. Putin’s KGB background and the number of KGB agents he brought into high government should be more than adequate warning that Russia was slipping away from the rule of law and becoming a gangster government.
I use this term deliberately because it is important to confront how far outside any reasonable diplomatic norm the current Russian regime is.
Gangster regimes break the law in their own favor, use force against the weak and the helpless, and loot on behalf of the power elite.
For the last few years we have watched as Putin has presided over the creation of a state machine of killings, intimidation, and theft. Now that state is further empowered by expensive oil and natural gas.
Putin has seized upon the West’s failure to have an energy strategy to inflate his own ambitions. He has enough money to rebuild the military, pay off his cronies, and support foreign adventures.
Recently he has advocated closer ties with Communist Cuba (clearly designed to unnerve the United States), the sale of advanced fighter aircraft to the Venezuelan dictator, Chavez, the proposed sale of the most advanced anti-aircraft systems to Iran (which would then protect their nuclear program against a possible Israeli or American air campaign), and now he has invaded a small neighbor.
Three Strategies to Contain the Russian Gangster Government
The United States should respond to the very dangerous Russian adventure in Georgia with three very aggressive strategies designed to make it much more expensive for Putin to continue his gangster behavior.
- The United States and our European allies should rush supplies and reconstruction materials to the people of Georgia to help them rebuild their country. Georgia is a small country (4,600,000 people) and with a concerted effort by the democracies they could come out of this crisis wealthier and more modern than before. That would sustain the democracy and be a signal of practical help to those who encounter gangsters.
- The United States and the democracies should wage an all out diplomatic campaign to isolate the Russian regime and treat it as the pariah a gangster ought to be. Force the Russians to veto Security Council resolutions after lengthy debates detailing their attack on a much smaller, sovereign neighbor. Suspend them from the Group of Eight (G8) until they publicly commit not to invade their neighbors. Start isolating Russian government officials from diplomatic invitations and begin examining the bank accounts of the Russian oligarchs who are Putin’s allies. There are many of steps which can be taken diplomatically to signal that gangster behavior is unacceptable.
- The United States and the other democracies (including Japan) should launch an all out effort to develop energy resources, energy technology, and energy conservation systems that strategically make Russian oil and gas useful but not vital. The Europeans should now have irrefutable evidence that Russia will use their dependence on Russian natural gas to strategically blackmail them. Furthermore they have clear proof Putin and his gangster government partners use their money to build up the military and boldly extend Russian power and influence in a destructive way. No response to the invasion of Georgia would be more powerful than a coherent and aggressive energy strategy designed to make Russia irrelevant in the world energy system.
A Fictional Introduction to the Gangster World of Putin’s Russia
Anyone who wants to understand the emerging gangster state of Vladimir Putin would do well to read Moscow Rules by Daniel Silva. This New York Times bestseller is the eleventh novel this former newsman has written and is part of a long series about an Israeli spy and assassin named Gabriel Allon.
In earlier novels, Silva captured the long and bitter war between terrorism and democracy that has been the burden of Israeli and now of American existence. In Moscow Rules, he shifts his attention to the war against democracy and the rule of law being waged a Russian gangster class of often illegal and occasionally violent state sponsored billionaires.
Moscow Rules captures the arrogance, ruthlessness, and willingness to torture and kill that have become the trademark of a KGB inspired and trained leadership elite in the Kremlin.
Silva understands the spirit of the new Russian gangster regime. It was willing to brazenly kill an émigré in a London bar by using a very obvious and easily traceable radioactive poison (as more than one observer has noted, almost as if they wanted to advertise to their enemies what they would do to anyone who dissented or threatened them). It has supported the methodical killing of reporters who are undertaking investigative and embarrassing efforts.
In Moscow Rules, a Russian international arms dealer is preparing to sell deadly weapons to Al Qaeda. It is Allon’s job to stop that from happening. In a fascinating tour de force Silva introduces you to the practical realities of the new Russian gangster regime and some of its more dangerous and threatening practices.
This novel combines exciting reading with a useful introduction to a system so amoral and so prone to violence that it is beyond the understanding of most western analysts.
If you want to understand the mindset which led Putin to invade Georgia and the willingness to use violence which is at the heart of that regime and is a serious threat to the stability of all its surrounding neighbors, Moscow Rules is a fascinating place to start.

CLEARLY, GEOPOLITICAL CONCERNS OF ENERGY INDEPENDENCE VASTLY EXCEED THE IMPORTANCE OF WHATEVER ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE DOMESTIC ENERGY PRODUCTION CAN DO. I AM A FREQUENT VISITOR TO SANTA BARBARA, CA, WHERE THE ORIGINAL OIL SPILL FORM AN OIL PLATFORM STARTED THE MOVEMENT AGAINST THE OFF-SHORE DRILLING AND IN PRINCE WILLIAMS SOUND IN ALASKA WHERE A TANKER SPILLED OIL. NO LONG-RANGE ECOLOGICAL DAMAGE IS VISIBLE. I AM SORRY THAT SOME BIRDS AND SEA OTTERS DIED, BUT FREEDOM FROM BEING BLACKMAILED BY RUSSIA AND ECONOMIC SURVIVAL OF THE US ARE CLEARLY MORE IMPORTANT. THE ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT IS DISCREDITING ITSELF BY ADHERING TO A LUNATIC FRINGE AGENDA. LET US BE RESPECTFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT, BUT LET US NOT COMMIT A NATIONAL SUICIDE TO PRESERVE IT.

Gee, it must be the Bigoted, Opinionated Republican in me that comes out when I read a post by someone named 'yeahright' in which they cannot even Capitalize God, Russia and Georgia, but DO capitalize hogwash- that I immediately conclude this is one ignorant individual. So, like yeah, right - it's no secret that the liberal left are Anti-Energy (sorry but liberals and left don't serve Caps.) It's the same tactic as always, by locking up our natural resources, they have created this debacle. What we are beginning to see is another classic left technique- they'll come back from their vacations on their white horses to save us with the original idea that we can drill here, drill now, pay less. And for those who have only tuned in to watch one riveting episode after another of Obama's "um and ahh" mantra (daily on NBC) - the light will come on and they'll never even know that this campaign began long ago without them. By the way, I live in the 'frontier" - surrounded by diseased timber which cannot be harvested because we must maintain certain roadless areas and protect woodpeckers and owls. The most responsible stewards for wilderness have been and still remain- those who make their livings from the land.

Sad isn't it . I wonder how Putin would like a special strike force right up the gut of Russia. Hit the capital in Moscow and kill the SOB along with others of the old regime. If anyone needs to know how its done bring Rumsfeld back. People like Obama don't get it. Growing up he probably always got his lunch money stollen. FREEDOM ISN'T FREE.

With Russia's comments today about their response to the shield, it looks like this is going to be a long term problem. Given Condi's knowledge of Russia, McAmnesty would be wise to choose her as his VP

Newt's three strategies -- YES. I suggest everyone call their senators and representatives and express support for this.
Meanwhile we can keep good thoughts and prayers that our leaders are listening to the best ideas and making wise decisions.

So we should rattle our sabers towards Russia over 2 areas of Georgia who want to be Russian? How about we send in an international team to hold a vote and if these territories vote to become part of Russia again we mind our own business. I love Newt and many of his ideas but it drives me nuts when people refuse to look at the way we stretch our military thinking we should be meddling in all world affairs.

Not to worry. Our savior Barack Obama will sit down with Putin and have a long and hard TALK with him. Obama will denounce Russia's actions in the strongest of terms. Then he will ASK the United Nations for a little help with the situation. After that he will hop into his Black SUV and drive off into the sunset but before he does he will instruct the driver to make sure that the tires are properly inflated.

Action #4 Activate our Nuclear Missle Submarines and make a big show of them going to sea. (Their Navy is currently a pile of rust and will take years to rebuild) Remember this arm of our Nuclear Triad they feared the most. They want to threaten our friends and allies. Remind them we carry a big stick and have shown we will use it. Bullies only respond to Strength and Force.

There's alot of good comments, insights, questions, and in one case, impressive knowledge (Ares Demertzis) on this page with the exception of "yeahright", who probably should refer to him/her/it's self as "lost cause" or "idiot". The short, to-the point version of Ares Demertzis comment is that President Clinton set the stage for WW III with his handling of the crisis in the, forever and always, volatile Balkans. I, like "Hot Shoe" knew that the demise of the USSR was way too easy and that we'd have to deal with the Russians again later and, am also in agreement, that the U.S. will have to re-instate the draft to insure it's survival. The best question... from "Pastor Paul" is the same one I've been asking for 2 years, "Newt, why aren't you running?"

All three proposals are viable but #3 I feel would be the most effective. Consider the fact that the Russian "Billionairs" got that way from OIL and Natural Gas. Pull the plug on these and you will get their attention big time. The same can be said for the middle east shieks. The way to accomplish this does not require any European wishy-washy BS. We need to commit ourselves to a "Manhatten Projest" style all out energy source transformation, Nuclear, Shale, Natural Gas and Drill wherever the oil is within reasonable limits. Become as energy independent as we possibly can in as short a time as possible. This effort should be one that brooks no delaying tactics by environmental legal entanglements. That is the road that got us into this mess in the first place. If Environmental Attorney(s), misguided legislators, or "code pink" types attempt to get in the way of this "Energy Express" he/she/they should be the first"road kill" of the campaign.
PC is Thought Control LEE PS: Newt, I am so glad to see you getting away from the Gobal Warming aka Climate Change scam. This global socialist scheme was the antithesis of everything you have stood for. It was bad science and worse economics.

Russia, a Godless country does what Godless coutries do. We are heading towards being a Godless Democratic nation vs the God fearing Republic we once were. I wish the general public had a clue.
We need to protect ourselve and make ourselves strong. That means up to and including energy independence. We need to stop jumping in every time someone else gets in trouble. The world will never learn if we send our blood and money at every corner. We need to set the example for every nation to follow, and worry only about making ourselves the strongest un-corrupt nation on earth. We have a long way to go to get back to where we once were. Pray!

The Kosovo factor in Georgia:
There is an aspect to the current Georgia conflict that has been explored by only a handful of individuals: the obvious link with the unjustifiable aggression by the West in general, and the United States in particular regarding Serbia.
President Clinton , in what some have interpreted as an attempt to divert attention from his impeachment woes, unilaterally and without international authorization, rained bombs on the Christian Serbian population to bring to an end what is today guardedly being considered to have been a deliberately exaggerated and invented “genocide” - the simultaneous massacre of Christian Serbs by Islam having gone unnoticed in mainstream media. One can ask the question “why Serbia?” when ethnic cleansing is practiced in so many other places, but that is a question for another post.
Those interested in a different interpretation of those tragic events than was and is available in Western media, can search the conflict on the internet through Serbian blogs and news outlets.
Those who consider such media suspect should keep in mind the difficulty in supporting the veracity of Western journalism.
Since 1999, the outcome of the Western campaign in Kosovo brought about a parallel status quo to the one established in South Ossetia and in Abkhasia. In short, NATO had created an autonomous area for the ethnic Albanians inside a sovereign country, Serbia; while Russia and the CIS have insured autonomous status for South Ossetians and Abkhasians inside another sovereign state, Georgia. From a Russian perspective the two cases were linked. The challenge began when during winter 2008, the US and the European Union decided to unleash Kosovo's separation despite Serbia's opposition.
In international jurisprudence, breaking away entities need validation by the country the partition is going to affect. In Canada for example, Quebec would always need the other provinces to agree on separation. Agreement of "both sides" is usually sought. But in the case of Kosovo, for international political motivations, including a gesture to please the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in the midst of a campaign to win hearts and minds, Washington and Brussels went ahead swiftly and endorsed Pristina's declaration of separation from Belgrade.
Rep. Tom Lantos (D-CA) during a Congressional hearing on Kosovo on April 17, 2007) stated: " . . . just a reminder to the predominantly Muslim-led governments in this world that here is yet another example that the United States leads the way for the creation of a predominantly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe. This should be noted by both responsible leaders of Islamic governments, such as Indonesia, and also for jihadists of all color and hue. . . . the United States stands foursquare for the creation of an overwhelmingly Muslim country in the very heart of Europe.”
Moscow made its intentions known on the day of Kosovo's declaration of independence. The Russian statement was poorly covered in the international media, as is the current Georgia conflict.
The press release said the Russian Federation will recognize the efforts by South Ossetia and Abkhazia to secede from Georgia. It was a clear eye for an eye declaration, but it went unnoticed in the West.
The confrontations taking place today in the Caucasus were triggered strategically in the Balkans few months before. Russia was ignored on the shores of the Mediterranean, it responded on the shores of the Black sea. It has become virtually axiomatic that we Americans are, as a general rule, ignorant of world history; I suspect this is a result of our short, two hundred something year existence as a nation, and its multicultural, heterogeneous composition. America does not look to the past, rather the emphasis is relentlessly on the future, however, most homogeneous millenarian cultures are obsessed by their past, and look to it as justification for their current actions and for the future. After the alleged demise of Communism (to be replaced in the West with a collective, “one world” ideal) America had the opportunity to forge a lasting political understanding with the Russians, unfortunately that was squandered in a continuing American Cold War mentality that insisted on provoking the historically paranoid sentiments of the Russians by offering their apostates membership in the European Union and NATO. The first striking injustice in treatment is clearly seen inside what was formerly the Yugoslav Federation. The international community, led by the US and Western Europe, immediately recognized the right of separation for the two breakaway Republics, but at the same time opposed the same right for self-determination for the Serbian national minorities within these two newly recognized countries.
The following question has never been answered: Why can Croats and Muslims separate from Yugoslavia while Serbs cannot implement that same right toward Croatia and Bosnia?
Each side will say their cause is more legitimate than the others but this doesn't supply any solutions. In 1999, ethnic Albanians, who are 14 percent of Serbia, called for forming a state of their own. Strangely the United States and Western Europe rushed to accept statehood for a group (Albanians) accounting for 14% of a country (Serbia) but rejected the same treatment for another group (Serbs) which accounts for 31% of another country (Muslim Bosnia). The ethnic Albanians are indeed a numeric majority in the province they claim, but so are the Serbs in the Province/Republic they've claimed in Bosnia.
Hence according to the fundamental principle of equal treatment, if the Albanians of Kosovo are to be granted self determination, the Serbs of Bosnia should be granted the same right. Such an equation would be fair and would open a path for global reconciliation in the Balkans. Linking partitions and breakups of countries to American success in rallying Muslim diplomatic support could bring great harm elsewhere around the world. Will the US also please the Wahhabis by forcing India to relinquish Kashmir, the Philippines to let go of Mindanao, Russia to cut Chechnya loose, Cyprus to abandon its Turkish north and last but not least, Israel to slice out half of the Galilee to its own Muslim minority? Washington initiated a world-religious parameter on the issue of Kosovo, and opened a Pandora's Box worldwide. Other enclaves forming in Europe could demand secession within existing liberal democracies based on their majority status in many suburbs of big cities, such as the reently riot-torn Parisian banlieues. Will the US press a future French (or German, Dutch or British) heads of state to concede secessions on their own soil to please Riyadh, Khartoum or eventually Tehran? In addition to the cases I mentioned earlier, think also of southern Sudan, Darfur, Algeria's Berbers, Biafra, the Sahara, southern Thailand, China's Uighur, the Maluku and Celebes islands in Indonesia, Sri Lanka's Tamils, Ahwaz Arabs in Iran, the Kurds of Turkey, Chechnya and Dagestan, and a plethora of other potential crisis. But also think of Northern Ireland, Corsica, the Basques, the Belgian linguistic conflict, the Scots in Western Europe. On the Eastern side of the continent no country is spared: Germans in Poland, Poles in Ukraine and Russia, Russians in the Baltic countries, Moldova, Rumania's Hungarians, Bulgaria's Turks and many other ethnic labyrinths. Even in the Americas, think of Quebec, Chiapas and the multiple ideological claims over the Southwestern parts of the US. I contend that should a North American Union not become a reality, it is precisely this precedent that will provide the basis for the secession of California, Nevada and New Mexico when those states reach a critical mass of Mexican immigration. My Mexican friends enjoy repeating a well-worn expression: “we will reclaim the territory stolen by the Gringos without firing a single shot.”
In short, Kosovo is not the first, nor would it be the last separatist phenomenon to be addressed. But it certainly could become the beginning of a new era, where rights would be granted equally among seekers of self determination if addressed fairly, equally and smartly.
Much of the above was taken from the following essays, I suggest to all those interested that they read their fascinating, and different interpretation of the Georgia debacle: http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/12/be_wise_on_kosovo.html http://www.americanthinker.com/printpage/?url=http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/08/south_ossetia_the_perfect_wron.html

The impulse to use avilable stealth technology to deliver a message to Putin in the form of destroyed miliatary hardware is a very tempting idea. That and the projection of power available with a carrier strike force. The question to be answered are we in a position to send that message and are we as a nation willing to stand behind that message if it means having to aggressively escalate our responses?

As usual, Newt gets it exactly right. We in the West, with the U.S. leading, have to confront these bullies, liars, and gangsters with a full complement of energy, political, and financial penalties that they'll feel. Either we draw a firm line in the sand now, or it's only a matter of time before the next soverign nation feels the jackboot of Ivan.

I have long said (right after the Berlin came down) than we are not done with Russia. Their paranoia is rooted in their genes. That is, every country is out to get them and anything the USA does to aid any Baltic country is a step toward attacking Russia. With this latest crisis, we must start to recognize the need for a vastly increased military force. The only way to achieve it is to reinstate the draft immediately! Not a topic most politicians have the courage to suggest, however.
