Newt Gingrich Statement upon Hearing of the Passing of Jack Kemp

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich released the following statement upon hearing of the death of former Congressman Jack Kemp:

Callista and I were deeply saddened to learn of Jack Kemp's passing.

Jack was a remarkable American who was a tireless public servant, a loving husband, and a devoted father.  We were fortunate to have known him as a friend.

Americans knew Jack as a football player, a student of history and economics, a Congressman, and a national leader.  Jack and I first worked together in 1976.  Throughout his life, he was a courageous and determined leader with an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of Americans by lowering taxes and increasing economic growth and opportunity for everyone.

In 1980 Governor Reagan adopted Jack's ideas for growing the American economy and history was made.  His buoyant and positive outlook made him an integral part of the Reagan revolution.

Constantly energetic and permanently optimistic, Jack Kemp was a man who had a larger than life presence that made millions of Americans feel better about themselves and their country.

Callista and I offer our deepest condolences to Joanne and the Kemp family during this difficult time.  Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

My husband played football against Jack in high school. We saw him at the Reagan Library last March. How could he have passed so quickly! We have admired him for these many years. God bless him and his family.

I met Jack Kemp on an NFL USO tour of Vietnam during the 1968 Tet Offensive. At our departure he described himself as a "Hawk, " but on return he called himself a "Well Armed Dove." Jack cared deeply about our troops and very suuportive.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jack in 1984. I was a graduating college student and went to Washington as a graduation present. I took Jack's book "An American Renaissance" solely in the hope that I might find him and get an autograph, and fortunately, I did! I will never forget what he said as he signed it....... "Five of these will get you an O.J. Simpson." Not sure how O.J.'s future (alleged...) actions changed that ratio, but it was really funny at the time. What a great man!

My father died at Jack Kemp's same age and in a similar manner. I was reminded of how fragile life can be, and reminded of how uncertain life is for ALL OF US. Jack was a great American. He will be remembered for his character and his integrity and the wonderful life he has led.
