Clip from Restoration Weekend: Impeach Judges, Crush and replace the Left and our Founders' "Victory or Death"

by Newt Gingrich

Someone pointed out to me this clip from my speech at Restoration Weekend is getting a lot of views. Why do you think it resonates? Let me know

Transcript:

NEWT GINGRICH: Now…I have been using that two plus two equals four to start the following conversation on economics, so I’ll just give this because it’s a wonderful tool.

I tell every audience: I’m going to give you half of a sentence…you give me the other half. And it’s exactly like two plus two equals four.

If you can’t afford to buy a house…what’s the second half? How many of you would agree that if you can’t afford to buy a house, don’t buy it? Raise your hand, I’m serious.

Now think about this, for twenty-five years we’ve lived a lie. For twenty-five years the official policy of the United States has been: If you can’t afford to buy a house, we won’t look at your credit rating, we won’t require down payment, we won’t make you pay any capital…any principal for three years, we’ll give you a below market interest rate.

You do that to one person, they go bankrupt, it’s a personal tragedy; you do that to a million people, it’s a national crisis. Yet have you heard any national political leaders say, “You know, the entire economic problem we’ve got right now is a cultural problem.”

We don’t want to reward saving and investing, we don’t want to reward working, we don’t want to encourage being prudent, we don’t want to the truth about your finances, we don’t want to make you be a responsible adult. And you think we could run a country this way?

So now let me apply two plus two equals four to our current problem: There’s more and more evidence coming out that the deeply troubled, non-Rotarian, who killed a number of Americans at Ft. Hood. I am only using politically acceptable language.

(Laughter)

We…we…we realize, many of you will understand that recently when we’ve arrested people in Denver, Detroit, and New York, as well as the troubled person in Ft. Hood, they all shared one common characteristic: They did not belong to Rotary.

And so I’ve begun to develop a brand new profiling system…built around non-Rotarians. Because I wouldn’t want to have any kind of profiling system which was politically insensitive, lacked clarity, or focused in on things like, “it’s turning out this guy is routinely… communicating with a radical cleric in Yemen. “
And the National Security Agency knew it…and the FBI knew it. And they were all standing around, “Well, maybe it’s a research project.”

Now, maybe before 9/11, you could say, “maybe it’s a research project.” This is madness.

And now you have an Attorney General whose basic position is: “Let’s have a public trial under American criminal defense model, with their lawyers having access or demanding access or suggesting access. Frankly, somebody should move…should introduce a resolution of impeachment. This is a…

(Applause)

Let me try to illustrate my point, because I think it’s why the concept of replace rather than reform is so important. I don’t want to be told that appointing an Attorney General whose law firm was pro bono defending terrorist made sense.

I don’t want to be told that when he appoints lawyers whose law firms defended terrorist pro bono, it made sense.

I don’t want to be told that people that care more about the rights of terrorist than the lives of Americans should be allowed to serve in the Justice Department of the United States.

(Applause)

One of the reasons the American people have not yet mobilized to the full power of their sovereign capacity is because they don’t yet have leadership that’s prepared to say, “This is real.” I mean, if you believe this is real and you believe we could lose an entire city…and you believe these people are needlessly endangering the United States, then we need to establish in House and Senate, and we need to establish across the country a standard of behavior which makes it clear that this is not a game. This is not politics, this is not business as usual.

And I’ll give you one closing example:

I believe we need a profound fight about religious liberty. I believe that fight became unavoidable when the Ninth Circuit Court ruled that saying one nation under God as part of the pledge was unconstitutional.

I believe it is a sign of a fascist mentality that the ACLU has filed a law suit about a cross in the middle of the Mohave Desert. I mean the idea that a cross in the middle of the dessert is a threat to the mind set of secular fanatics tells you almost everything you need to know.

And I’m a historian, so my reaction to this is to read history.

In 1802, the Jeffersonians passed the Judiciary Act of 1802. Jefferson knew a fair amount about the constitution, Madison knew vastly more; they were both in the administration.

The judiciary Act of 1802 abolishes eighteen out of thirty-five federal judges…doesn’t impeach them, abolishes them…says, “Were not paying you, you can’t go to…there’s no court.”

Several of them said, “this was inappropriate, it’s was a lifetime appointment.”

They went to the remaining seventeen judges to file a suit and the remaining seventeen judges said, “Have you lost your mind? If I accept the suit they are going to abolish my court.”

(Laughter)

This is…this is, by the way, precisely what Hamilton and Madison wrote in the Federalist Papers, “That anytime the weakest of the three branches takes on the two elected branches, if the two elected branches are serious, they will in fact guarantee the defeat of the Judicial branch. Now…

(Applause)

As many of you know, I am a moderate…so I would only propose not to abolish over half of all the judges, which is what Jefferson did, I would merely propose to abolish the Ninth Circuit and re-recruit….because, if we’re serious, that’s the right reaction.

You show me a judge so ignorant they believe it’s unconstitutional to say, “One nation, under God,” I’ll show you a judge who shouldn’t be drawing money from the tax payers…very Straight-forward relationship.

And remember in closing, the reason I wrote the wonderful book that Gay helped inspire at Mount Vernon, To try Men’s Souls, is because we thought, when we sat down and discussed it a year and a half ago, that we would get to a point when we would have high unemployment, foreign enemies, and a radical administration. And people would want to know, “what is it Americans once did?” and “How is it that we become America?”

And on Christmas Day 1776, Washington’s Army had collapsed from thirty thousand in Brooklyn in September to twenty-five hundred; less than one out of every thousand Americans had the courage to be with Washington on Christmas Day.

Of that twenty-five hundred, one third did not have boots; they wrapped their feet in burlap and they left a trail of blood marching the nine miles to Trenton.
Washington decided to cross an icy river at night…in a snow storm, to march at night to surprise eight hundred professional German soldiers, win a surprise victory, capture all eight hundred, and reestablish the legitimacy of the revolution.

Two weeks later, he had fifteen thousand volunteers. The password that night was: Victory or death!

I want you to go from here after this weekend and look every successful person you know in the eye and look every patriot you know in the eye, and tell them: There are young men and women risking their lives all around this planet, in uniform, in the State Department, in the intelligence community, so we can be free. Don’t tell me how much you’ve given, don’t tell me how tired you are, don’t tell me how frustrating it is.

This country was created by people who were willing to say,”Victory or death,” while marching in burlap bags in the middle of a snow storm. We are going to find those people again; we are going to run those people for five hundred and thirteen thousand offices, in both parties.

We are going to have to isolate and crush the secular, socialist left, and we are going to have to replace their failed system with systems that succeed. This is work George Washington would have approved of and this is work you need to take seriously for the next three years, so we can give our children and grandchildren the greatest, freest, and most prosperous country in history.

Thank you, very, very much.

It resonates because it is clear and American.

By Anonymous @ Sunday, January 31, 2010 1:03 AM
Newt, what is your take on the Middle East peace process, Israel, the Palestinians and the settlements? Everything seems to be stuck. Who's fault is this?

By misterc @ Saturday, January 30, 2010 10:42 PM
Newt, I like your approach to a degree. What will do you in is your bare bones honesty. Too many Americans don't like bare facts, they live in a fantasy world and don't want to be bothered. Granted we need to return, to a degree, to the attitude of our founding Fathers. There is an underlying sentiment in America of Christian morals and pro-Isreal sentiment.
"One nation Under God" wasn't always there but I believe it belongs there. It is a start coupled with your experience against a previous Democrat over an "indiscretion"
that should not have happened. We are waiting for a certain person's arrogance to over run him who tells us that America is no longer a Christian nation- well neither is he. i agree with the 'non-rotarian' mentality. America needs an internal backbone. a backbone that is not controlled by the conservative side nor the liberal side but a mix of both to temper the mind.

By Anonymous @ Wednesday, January 27, 2010 11:16 PM
It resonates because its straight forward, it addresses a problem, and there is no sense that its merely "tough talk."

By ericrobinson @ Wednesday, January 27, 2010 2:56 PM
Barack Obama sounds like a freshman PoliSci student who's fallen in love with Karl Marx, and Newt sounds like he could have been a member of the Constitutional Convention.

By Anonymous @ Thursday, January 21, 2010 5:29 PM
Newt,
Jefferson said something to the effect, don’t talk to me about confidence in man, but when it comes to power, bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution. I know you have said and have done a lot to awaken people concerning the loss of our freedoms. But I don’t hear anything about correcting the root of our problems. The root of our problems was the destruction of the Vertical separations of powers, which stripped the states of the power to control the Federal government. We must repeal the 16th and 17th Amendment if we really want to regain and protect our freedoms

By Anonymous @ Sunday, January 17, 2010 12:01 PM
If the republican party should ever gain control of congress again, my hope is that WE get off their dead, wimpy asses and get the job done that they WE keep preaching we"re going to do.

By cswamericanpatriot @ Wednesday, January 13, 2010 10:13 AM
I loved and agreed with the key points you eloquently laid out in your speech at the David Horowitz conference and other venues I have seen you in. This critical thinking and the direction it will take America resonates with a great many Americans who like you, want to be faithful to the foundational tenets our forefathers set in the Constitution. Politics in its present form is corrupt and valueless. Like Ben Franklin said, "Tolerance is the virtue of a people who don't believe in anything." A lifelong Republican, sadly disappointed in recent past Republican lack of stewardship of those principles, am eager to support and participate in a renewal of "American values" and strongly believe we must have a very strong leader to lead the way. America needs a major transformation back to the values you espouse. Only strong leadership will get us there. Are you that man? I hope so, as we have been searching and hoping for this for some time. Stay on the course, Newt, and should you run for President, a landslide victory in 2012 is assured. Remember though, that the message must not just be what needs to be done, but how it will be done. It seems that "How" is always the missing piece. You must clearly articulate how these changes will occur. Use some of Ross Perot's communication skills through graphs, slides, etc. A picture is worth a thousand words, and it will give far greater import and remembrance to the people. Go Newt, knowing there are many patriotic Americans who will support you all the way, and many who will be line right by your side. Wanting to help in Colorado, best regards - CW

This person hit the nail on the head - however the comment should be made to EVERY American who is angry, or sick of it -
"Here's the problem Newt, you'll talk a good talk but when it comes to crunch time..." When it comes to crunch time MOST Americans are sitting at home complaining, or complaining with their like minded friends, but no one is getting into the thick of the battle and getting involved with making this change happen by supporting the candidates who do step up to the plate. We are all like a bunch of frogs sitting in the pond and the heater on the pond is gradually being brought to a boil. What happens to frogs when the water boils? It's to late to jump out of the pond.
When those emails that come that say send an email, or make a call, or sign this petition, we all need to be doing this in triplicate. The squeaking wheel is getting the oil, and the squeaky wheel is the special interest groups, the liberal left, the minority groups, and the illegal aliens!!! BTW - I contribute: cash, time, emails, holding signs, and signing petitions

Hello from an old student of Nationalism this is serious business for one dedicated individual to assume having been a kingpin in a neoconservative movement , he has a dedicated right to serve politics and religion at the same time , but beware of the constitution

By Anonymous @ Thursday, January 07, 2010 1:29 PM
Well fist, I've always felt like a patroit. My love for this country can't be over stated. I feel like the best approach that patriot's can take now is to simply show up at some of the rallie's going on around the country. My wife and I attented the one in D.C., It was awesome, so many like minded people. Neither of us could have been more proud for making the effort. These are catching the attention of A lot of folk's. If we can keep this force going and GROWING we can chage around the things that need changing, and possibily leave our children and grandchildren more of a nation with the same flavor of what we grew up in, LOVE OF COUNTRY. We have made some great process as a society, but we have also made our mistakes. It's just time to correct the mistakes.

By Anonymous @ Wednesday, January 06, 2010 6:00 PM
I agree that the culltural experiment with secular socialist is a total failure----It is time to crush and replace this system with a system that will be better.
We not only should impeach the activist judges around this country but fire and get rid of some of Obama staff appointments--Eric Holder comes to mind---

By idbogue1955 @ Tuesday, January 05, 2010 12:02 PM
This is the sort of speech that can get you elected Newt! In this video you are concise, strong, no nonsense, factual, reeking of common sense, truthful, knowledgeable, and ready to fight to preserve the US Constitution and our right to freedom. In this speech you actually sound much like Sarah Palin, but with added experience in the US Congress and Senate. "We the people" are truly fed up with politics as usual in Washington and how out of touch special interest driven politics are with every day Americans. A mistake many commentators are making today is that Americans are afraid. The fact is, we are not afraid. We are angry. Angry with the lies and as candidate after candidate says one thing while running for office, then does another once they are in office. We've had it. Governor Palin's attraction is that she is honest and trustworthy. The US cannot afford continued control by Democrats in the Congress and in the Presidency. I agree with you that Americans need a leader. The questions is, is there an honest and trustworthy candidate willing to step up and follow through once elected? If not, I wonder if Americans will take action within individual states to ensure the Federal government is not allowed to force us into socialism.

By Anonymous @ Monday, January 04, 2010 3:41 AM
Why does it resonate? Because it is the truth. Truth always resonates. But now what? We need candidates and I would volunteer but I don't have the money for a Congressional campaign. I have been a Mayor and a School Board Member, but it was lonely being out voted 4 -1 on many issues even where the public supported my position. It takes more than just one or two conservatives. It takes a majority and willing people to put their name in the hat.

By Anonymous @ Friday, January 01, 2010 2:49 AM
You are correct, Newt. In order to throw-out the bad guys/gals we must do it in the primary elections. If they get through the primaries our only choices are to vote for "bad" or "worse." We will never have a good government that way.

By Anonymous @ Thursday, December 31, 2009 9:33 PM
Newt reminds us of OUR history which so few people living in the USA have studied. I have great fear of the direction we are currently headed. Do not forget that first Germany aborted babies, then took all who were disabled physically and mentally and they "disappeared", then the elderly were killed. Newt's video resonates because all honest people recognize truth when they hear it. It happened in Germany and it can happen here. We are not immune to evil.

You guys in your party, just don't like or want to help Pres., you all stood behind EX PRES.BUSH, he did no wrong in your eyes. Will you need to open them and look around and se what your EX pres. the mess left this fre world in. Quit fight and join in our forces and we will get things done a lot better. All U guys do is fight what ever he wants to do, opn you eye Newt. You were no good for GA., and your still trying to keep the ittle man down.

By Anonymous @ Wednesday, December 30, 2009 8:58 PM
I love when you talked about rebuilding the twin towers exactly the same. The visual it gave me was very moving. Just to think we could've built it right back up like nothing happened is very powerful. That would've really sent a strong message to the world. You should really talk about that when you're on foxnews.

By Anonymous @ Wednesday, December 30, 2009 5:51 PM
Both parties have sold out the principles this Country was founded on, and worked so well for the first 180+ years. I am reluctant to keep voting Republican since you guys screwed us too, but as has been the case for far too long, it's voting for the lesser of two evils. "W" was no great choice, but a tad better than Gore, McCain, what a joke he turned out to be, had it not been for Sarah Palin I probably would have stayed home, give us good Conservative candidates, and win or lose, it's better to lose with a good candidate than win with another false Conservative.
The Media elected Obama, and until the American voter wakes up and stops believing every 30 second sound bite, they will re elect him.
And why does Congress have such a lot approval, but keep getting re elected, STUPID voters.
So until you turn off the money machines, Unions, Corporations, and chase the Lobbyists out of Washington, nothing is going to change

By Anonymous @ Wednesday, December 30, 2009 4:10 PM
The clip is outstanding as far as it goes. The problem my wife and I have is that the system, itself, not just the present Democratic Congress and White House, is broken, perhaps beyond repair. Given the Republican track record before losing Congress in 2006, we have no faith that a restored Republican majority will do anything to further the issues you raise in the Youtube clip.
The health care debacle threatens the economic underpinnings of the nation; the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are fought without a commitment to win, we cozy up to enemies and snub allies and the president apologizes to everyone. We believe in American exceptionalism, but also believe that, if the present system remains in place (cronyism, earmarking, excessive spending, failure to provide for the common defense, ignoring the wishes of the people in favor of the well connected, etc) then we will, in short order, become a second rate power, mired in low growth, weakened defense, excessive government intervention in the economy and the lives of individuals and run by "experts" of the Progressive bent.

Great speech Newt---you've made many great speeches. This country needs you, you've got to throw your hat in the ring in 2012.

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 7:28 PM
Newt, your obvious intelligence and common sense are refreshing. However, I worry that we might already have created a country full of imbeciles that are content to have their government "take care of them". I pray there are enough folks still out there willing to wear the "burlap" and make the march.

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 5:12 PM
Honorable Mr. Speaker....To answer your question takes only one word: vision. Plus what makes it resonate is you, delivering it with passion with no spin and no"1984 speak". I see the real "Newt", the leader and not the man in the wilderness: writing and talking. The time for a Churchill in American history has arrived....you are that man.

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 3:39 PM
A "moderate" would not have given that speech. You are a true conservative. We need to keep the Conservative movement growing....urgently. Make a 10 point plan for this movement, publish it and see what happens!

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 3:36 PM
Because it is simple common sense, which is greatly lacking in Washinton. Newt, You are a true American! I would love to see you run for president on 2012!

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 3:25 PM
Because it shows that you are a radical who is deservedly out of power, and still toeing the corporatist line? Was the "Official policy of the US" you talk about actually the official policy of Countrywide Loans? You want a "moral policy of the United States" about who can get a mortgage, but then you want absolute freedom for everything else?

Please try to keep internal consistency in your speeches. That one fails. Badly.

You want to disqualify anyone from service in the Justice Department if their law firm did pro bono work for terrorists? That's bizarre and stupid. You want America to be free? Give people the right to a defense, and if they are guilty, then execute them.

I'm tired of the Republican line of "kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out." Terrorists will fear us because of our might and our justice. You want to end the justice, and by doing so, you are only playing into their hands.

On "Abolishing the 9th Circuit," if I recall correctly, you used to be speaker of the House, right? With a Republican senate? Where was that bill when you had the chance?

You talk a big game, but your actions in the past speak louder than your words now.

Please do not do us the disservice of equating military service with your brand of politics.

I went to mass and lit a candle when you resigned in disgrace in late 1998, thanking God that you were not in power any longer. Now, although you make millions for your clients (without telling your supporters) to me, you are just entertainment.

Good luck.

By Anonymous @ Monday, December 28, 2009 1:40 PM
ou make so much sense but there is one problem Newt...you seem reluctant to actually take up the mantle of leadership. I doubt that the Republican establishment will accept you as their leader and it is time one of two things should happen: you (we) take over the Republican Party, or you lead us into a viable third party.

A third party, espousing your philosophy, can win several house seats and perhaps a couple senate seats. It almost happened in NY-23 with no organization. A conservative coalition (third pary plus GOP) can win the presidency on one or the other ticket. We need someone with your stature to give legitimacy and unification to the tea party movement. You can lead this no longer silent majority if you choose. Please choose.

By Wally @ Sunday, December 27, 2009 10:27 PM
"Victory or Death". Makes sense. Tea Party is a leaderless movement. No rudder.

Potential Energy ready to be Kinetic Energy.

Americans still sit as the Government takes their future away. 2010, Government will take Americans disposable income (Taxes). Will America get off the couch then? Amnesty? Unemployment? Take Guns Away? $5 a gallon gasoline? Fairness Doctrine? Take Away Free Speech? Right to Assemble? No Miranda Rights Since they were taken away from the Terrorists in U.S. Criminal Court?

What will it take for Americans to realize when they have nothing more to lose and that they must fight the Government for a cause greater than themselves and their SUV/Blackberry's (made in Canada)?

My kids are grown. My faith is in God. The Gadsden Flag flies boldly. I await for the signal in the steeple by the harbor.

stop mucking around and run for the next President of the USA. The reflective world will be grateful!

By Anonymous @ Sunday, December 27, 2009 2:15 PM
Newt, It is good to hear you speak clearly about the insanity of these pervasive liberal ideas that should never see the light of day and yet are being coercively deployed. The long collusion of the socialists, media, educational system, and too often unprincipled Republicans now leaves our freedom and capitalism at high risk. This is a massive liberal ideology bubble being driven by very corrosive ideas of political correctness, global warming, cap/trade, designed to enslave and impoverish. The cost is going to be unimaginable to our economic well-being and freedom unless we speak out and resist. Conservatives like me are looking for leaders that will help rally us to protect Americans from economic rape and pillage. We need leaders who can repeatedly say NO, NO, NO to the madness and can deliver principled alternatives in easy to understand terms. Republicans need to embrace and talk conservative economic stewardship for all Americans, and expose the liberal economic rape and pillage for what it is.

By syviatoby @ Sunday, December 27, 2009 9:42 AM
Because it makes sense. It is simple, it is truthful and above all it is honest. Some of us, I wish there were more but wishing does not make it come true, Would prefer honesty and truthfulness above sugar and ruffles.....lies in any form are lies.

By gedoug @ Sunday, December 27, 2009 9:14 AM
Because you are forcefully standing up for America; with disregard for political correctness or what some news organization or personality may say in rebuttal! Using the history of our founding as a point of reference you are appealing to every true Americans desire to “fight back” against the onslaught of Marxism. There are millions just waiting for exactly this kind of leadership. Someone to say what needs to be said about what is going on in this country without worrying about how it affects their political standing. NO TAP DANCING! (A lie is a lie...say it. The motivation behind Obamacare is control and power....say it). We need the same resolve our founders displayed when they risked their honor and worldly possessions... everything...for liberty. Many conservatives are opposing the Obama/Reid/Pelosi cabal but NONE have become angry that our country is being destroyed from within. No one is displaying the same outrage the American people are feeling. We are being ignored, ridiculed, and lied to daily by the current administration and have no outlet. Your speech and ones like it provide the outlet that is needed. I was standing up before you finished it.
