Endorse JD Hayworth and all will be forgiven.

Classy.

Better late than never. I was starting to get worried about you.

I am grateful to have such a prudent and honest leader on the side of conservatism!

“I think, at the time, as a party builder and someone who’s always been trying to help build the party, it struck me that she was the local nominee… She turned out not to be, frankly, a loyal Republican.”

First we need to figure out how she got the endorsement of the local Republican committee in the first place. That was the most egregious failure. After that, your mistake was merely unconditional party loyalty.

I believe the Party’s problem stems from misinterpreting the 2006 congressional elections. In 2006, many fiscally conservative voters pulled the lever for Democrats promising the fiscal restraint the Republicans stopped delivering. The message to Republicans was “represent our values or be voted out.” The message Republican leaders and Party loyalists heard was “the country is moving to the left, so we better move with it.” This, I believe, lead to the nomination of John McCain in 2008 and a left-leaning RINO in NY-23.

On the other hand, the message to Democrats was “we put our values before our party.” The message the Democrats heard was “we have a mandate to proceed aggressively with our liberal agenda.” The recent Gubernatorial and Senate elections should have corrected that mistake.

“Scott Brown, on many issues, would not meet a 100% purity test.”

Most of us don’t expect 100%, but there has to be some threshold. The “R” next to a candidates name used to mean something; we would like it to mean something again. The Tea Party is a group of former Republicans whose Party stopped being loyal to them – not the other way around.

Finally, a politician who can admit he made a mistake. I could vote for a Josiah Bartlett type in either party because the character spoke his mind rather than say what he needed to to get elected.

Very nice Newt. I like your honesty. Now move on and get back to the basics. As long as you stand on your principles and admit your mistakes, it will be hard for any of them to bring you down into the mud with them.

THANKS FOR BEING SO HONEST!!! VERY FEW OF THEM LEFT OVER THERE!!! AND TO ACKNOWELDGE YOU WERE WRONG THEY WERE RIGHT, IS A BIG POSITIVE FACTOR, THAT WE SHOULD HAVE NO REASON TO DOUBT WHAT YOU SAY OR AM GOING TO DO!!! THANKS FOR YOUR HONESTY.

Newt,
Thank you for your honesty.
This exchange demonstrates why conservatives are dominant in this country. They are more likely to listen to the people, admit when they are clearly wrong, and change their approach based on what the people want. This is not always true - but it should be the model for all politicians.

Too bad those hundreds of posts at the time telling you how wrong your were didn't register. Next time that many people tell you that you look sick, lie down.

I wish we could see that kind of honesty more often in our government. Saying "I make a mistake" and learning from it is hardly ever seen anymore. It's no wonder that the confidence level in our elected officials is so low.

I am confident that Newt addressed this quite some time ago on Fox, basically saying what he said here. I do not know the exact date, I think it was on Greta's program.

How refreshing to hear someone in the public political spotlight admit to an error in judgement

By DanMcCabePA @ Tuesday, February 02, 2010 11:51 AM
Ditto on the comments above, but why did it take so long for Newt to say this? The backlash was almost immediate and now it is 3 months later? I think Newt is great and that this is a minor issue overall.

Go figure! A public figure that can actually admit he made a mistake. I do agree with your comments about building the party. Republicans have a tendency to "eat their own" as it were. If someone isn't 100% in line with the Republican philosophy then too many conservatives would rather have a liberal in the office than admit they voted for a candidate who supported, for example, Pro-choice.
