| A member of Congress is providing real leadership to strengthen the value of learning English in America. I’m Newt Gingrich, more in a moment. Back in May I told you about how the government is suing the Salvation Army for requiring that its employees speak English on the job. The two employees at the Framingham, Massachusetts chapter of the Salvation Army were put on notice and given a full year to learn enough English to use at work. A year came and went and the two had not complied. So they were let go. That’s when the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission – a taxpayer funded bureaucracy – decided to sue the Salvation Army – a private, charitable, religious, non-profit group. They say that the Salvation Army discriminated against the two employees by requiring they speak English on the job, despite the 2003 ruling the Salvation Army was following. Fortunately for the Salvation Army, and millions of other small businesses and organizations in America, Florida Congressman Cliff Stearns is defending English from the politically correct bureaucrats. He’s introduced an amendment that would prohibit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from harassing companies that require their employees to speak English while on the job. Like you and I, Congressman Stearns believes the U.S. government should be encouraging the learning of English by immigrants, not encouraging lawsuits. His amendment deserves the rest of Congress’ support, and ours. That’s my opinion, what’s yours? Write me at newt.org. I’m Newt Gingrich and together we can win the future.

In 1972 we bought a house in a quiet neigborhood of middle-class one-family homes. We qualified for a larger house in a more expensive area but we knew we could not put our children in government schools so we purchased a house that would cost less. The government schools were teaching that sight-memorize method of reading (remember that disaster) and God was removed (so every teacher could teach what was right in their own estimation).
Everything went well until about five years ago. Most of the children of the neighborhood have grown up and many of the residents are older people. One by one the houses were sold. We stayed because we paid for our home, our children grew up here and we loved our home.
Unfortunately, we now find our home surrounded by Mexicans. It seemed to happen over night. All of a sudden we have twice the traffic. We can't visit with our neighbors (believe me we have tried) because they do not speak English. Two of the houses are filled with men.
Now we must move or put the police station on "speed-dial." The loud Mexican music and parking anywhere is beyond our description - and at 11:30 - 12:00 at night.
The houses are selling for at least $50-$60,000 less than worth. Folks now know we live in a transition area.
The neighbor next door (we knew these neighbors for years, loved them and miss them - they both passed away and the children sold the property) has turned his two-car garage into a barracks. Sometimes there are two cars outside - sometimes there are six.
I, no longer go to the grocery stores in my neighborhood. I no longer go to the bank in the evening. I do not walk alone in my neighborhood.
I am a very young 65 but I am sick of what my government has allowed. I wanted to grow old here. The stores are full of Mexicans, the emergency rooms are full of Mexicans, the school bus drivers say most the children are Mexicans.
These people do not want to become Americans.
Thank you for listening!
