It used to be a cliche that if you were defeated by the United States of America in war it was ultimately the best thing that could happen. From the point of view of how Americans would pick up the pieces, introduce elected government, the rule of law & ultimately a marriage of liberty & opportunity how could this be bad? Ask a German? Someone from Japan? Look up what the economic effects of the Marshall Plan were for England, France, Italy, The Netherlands never mind Germany . . .

I was reading on Mexico and their quest for self reliance and independence. It took Mexico 100 year to find some level of stability. Actually those 100 years are call the century of insurgents. (sounds familiar?). How naive are we to demand that Iraq finds stability and democracy in 2 to 3 years? It will take time and it will not be even close to what we know.
